I don't think you have to be an artist, but I do think it's a pattern recognition thing and a training thing, which some people might be naturally better/worse at and improved with training (artists would likely check both boxes). Identifying plants and animals is similar. As a kid I'd hear "watch out, that's poison ivy!" and have no idea what I was even looking for, but now I can ID a lot of different species just by taking a quick look.
