How do you have your game and mic volumes set up on obs? I have the mic level at 125% and I think the game was at 60%. For my mic I have everything set up so it’s as high as it can get before clipping starts, so I don’t think increasing the level is an option. I thought dropping the game down to 60% should be enough to make my mic cut through the game, but one of my viewers mentioned my mic was kinda low. I think the problem might be that I’m using a dynamic mic, it sounds perfect when I talk directly into it, but sometimes I get absorbed in the game that I start positioning my mouth to the left or the right of the mic or something. Would a condenser mic be better for me? Or should I just drop the game volume to 30%? Would viewers be turned off if the game volume was that low?

This is one thing I don't envy about females. They seem to grow faster than they can really develop a real genuine community. And they attract some of the most mouth breathing retards you can imagine sometimes. If they are smart they crack down on that shit hard. Me? I've had maybe 2-3 incidents over the last year with viewers getting out of hand. I know all of my regulars well and we feel like a genuine group of friends. I've also developed a bit of an "extended universe" with my streamer friends. If I see one of my good streamer friends streaming I will usually find a decent chunk of my own audience watching them too, and we are all growing an audience together.

I just don't see that kind of thing with the females. Lots of them get decent but small audiences just from self posting in places. They aren't ever really pushed to do serious networking, and I feel like many females never push past the social awkwardness to becoming friends with other streamers. It's a little bit unfortunate, but on the other hand they don't usually have the extremely common male problem of having to stream to the void for long periods of time, so maybe it evens out a bit.

Women also have a ceiling that they can’t grow out of. The top 100 streamers are like 90% men. But most streamers in the 50-100+ CCV range are like 90% women. It’s easy for women to get viewers but rarely are there any that are entertaining enough to actually break through that mold. As a male, one thing I have noticed as my CCV has grown is that popularity is kind of a self perpetuating thing. That people are not watching you is proof that you shouldn't be watched, and if people are watching you it is proof that you deserve to grow. And I can only imagine that intensifies as you get into 3 view and 4 view status. So this leads to a feast or famine model for males. The ones who have been around for a long time are the ones who have the huge audiences. And the new people are lucky to even get the occasional viewer who will give him an honest chance. This is why networking with other males early on is vital to your success, you have to shortcut the early famine period of streaming. Even if your entire audience is entirely made up of other chuubas it's hard to overstate the value that having 10ccv instead of 2ccv gives you. Not to say that the quality of your stream don't affect the level of your growth, but it really is not the primary factor.

To me it appears like females operate on a bit of a different model. For females the quality of their streaming skills personality and production quality are much more important to how quickly they grow. But even the lower value females have some kind of intrinsic value that viewers want. However the big difference is that for the vast majority the value of that girl is inversely related to how many viewers they have at any one time. So for example let's say you have a viewer named Ted. Ted would enjoy watching some 10/10 girl no matter how many viewers she might have, let's say she is his Oshi. But he might be tempted to watch some 3/10 instead of she had just 2 viewers, since this would give Ted quite close access to that girl even if she isn't his number one favorite. So most girls kind of have a natural limit to their natural audience based on their desireability as a chuubas. Males are more limited based on their competition that is streaming at any particular time.

Dumb question but if twitch lists a game as having an average viewer of 3, that mean you generally shouldn't expect to have a CCV higher than 3 if you stream the game right? Unless of course you've already gained a sizable following that will follow you to that game.

What if a game averages 17 viewers? If you maintain a semblance of quality, like good audio and a catchy title and have average interaction with the viewers, would that mean that you'll get something close to 17 CCV? Or is the game's average viewer count so high because all the streamers have done a good job growing their individual channels and basically as an outside you're not going to benefit from that?

multistreaming is a fundamentally bad idea because it makes it harder for viewers to keep up with what each other is talking about. they can't read chat, they have to read your screen and talk to the other person like they're communicating with a fucking ghost or something. and if you want me to be a dirty numberfag about it, growth begets growth and when you've only got 4 viewers having them split across two different channels on two different sites just means you'll grow half as fast.

hello asp, i have an issue. i sound so different between my iphone mic and a shure sm7b. over the iphone i sound really good and honestly kind of seductive if i do say so myself (i am female) but over the sm7b i sound so weird. like it makes me sound almost masculine or at least androgynous. is this just something that can be resolved with proper filters? if i could sound like i do on my phone through the shure id be super happy. thanks in advance if any audionerd anon has any advice.

the sm7b usually makes voices warmer and deeper. I'm not sure what kind of brainworm you have but we can't really help you if we don't get examples of both. you shouldn't be needing to apply filters to the sm7b, other than EQ. there's physical EQ switches on the back of the sm7b you can try out but again if we don't know what you prefer to sound like nobody can give you any advice. I have both the mic and an iphone13 and i can confidently say the sm7b sounds miles better but that isn't surprising

the answer is that you need to EQ your mic
specifically: download something like equalizerAPO + Peace and apply EQ to your microphone

you need to sit down for a couple hours and really do analysis on your voice. record a clip of yourself reciting some basic sentences in typical streaming cadence, load that clip into eg. FL Studio, play it back, isolate specific frequencies (especially room resonances and nasal sounds,) EQ them (within FL studio, on the specific clip) and repeat until the clip sounds how you want your voice to find
it sounds hard but you can do it in a couple hours easily

honestly, even after doing all this, i think the sm7b should be sounding good enough out of the box. I was never a huge EQ guy though. I've been trying for months to get my voice to sound decent, and even though I get compliments for it now I have given up making it sound good enough for me. Can't EQ out self-bias.

Definitely recommend everyone to at least try out EQ'ing at least once, even if it's just to learn how it works. It can be used to isolate noise and other things aswell.

but re: the first part of your post, its possible that in your acoustic environment your mic sounded acceptable out of the box while for someone in the next house over it wouldn't. literally anything in your recording environment can make a mic sound bad. fun fact, if you have curtains near you, having them up vs down will likely cause a dramatic effect on how your mic sounds.

Well, I stream from the babi-cageTM (a bunch of blankets i put up around me), so it's funny you mention that. I always prefer analogue sound treatment first before post-processing it, but we've come a long way and software is really good these days so it's not the biggest deal if you cant. I do have reafir installed (i used it for my previous mic), it's almost magical how well it works compared to a conventional noisegate, I keep recommending it to people because it's so good at isolating noises that have a specific frequency (like an AC or PC fans) especially because you can just load it into OBS too
