I love lore for games and stuff but for vtubers it's a bad idea. Almost every single girl in Hololive isn't going to give a shit about lore, they just want to play games and sing. If the girls don't like it then whenever they're forced to talk about it it'll just be a chore for the audience to sit through. Best case scenario Hololive highers some writers to sneak some lore into the lyrics of the girl's songs, and in some collaborative projects, and the girls never talk about it on stream or even really know about it. Worst case scenario the girls have to memorize and recite some shitty lore every now and again and have a bunch of spergs freak out when they accidentally contradict it.

Simple lore is better. Gura's lore is perfect. She's from Atlantis and she showed up on a beach naked, that's it. Simple and fun, as it should be.

There's some benefits for giving lore to a vtuber, if they can use it, but as you said, simple is best. Another important thing is to not bake the lore into the design too much, else it forces the talent to act according to it. Kiara is a good example here: since her OG design leans so much into the fast food franchise aspect, she had two choices: either embrace the lore or just wait until a second outfit and let the lore fade into obscurity. She chose the former and it worked out for her since the viewers adopted the setting as well while she also has fun with it.
