The scraping of content, especially protected intellectual property, from websites for AI purposes is probably bigger than any of us can possibly realize. Every major website will probably radically shift to restrictive rate limits in the next few years, if they don't otherwise opt for privacy invasive verification methods.

Typical scarpers in my experience make anywhere from like 10s to 100s of requests a second to the server for new stuff and do that indefinitely until they complete what you have asked them to scrape without stopping. A normal user does what loads their homepage clicks a few tweets, does something else for a few minutes, comes back searches something, clicks a few results, goes away comes back half an hour later when they get a push notification.
