Ok, we're at 100 submissions now. I think the biggest /board/ sings was bury the light with 130 people, but I'm not sure. I'm tired as hell so I'll just explain why this takes so long and post a draft later.

Top pic is the spectrum of a raw file, theres a lot of noise, hum at 150hz, harsh sibilance from 8k to 15k, and a lot of low frequency stuff that will ruin the final mix. Some submissions have weird resonant peaks that aren't very consistent, so I have to manually attenuate those. Also, I know you're not supposed to high pass vocals that high, but since there's 100 people singing, that low freq stuff builds up pretty quick. Fixing this kind of stuff takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes.
Then I have to line everything up, so I listen to the whole submission and manually adjust everything because I'm a control freak. Sometimes a few words are off by a few ms or a quarter note, or people mess up something and I just cut it out. This usually takes 5 minutes. The last pic is just the extra processing I have: soothe2, ff proq3 as dynamic eq in case I missed something in rx8, and a limiter. The limiter is oversampling too because it's usually doing a lot of gain reduction, so that adds to the export time.

Yeah, I do want more voices to be audible. What I'll probably do is divide everyone into groups, and each group will sing half of a verse, and everyone will sing the chorus. Just so that people have a higher chance of being able to hear their voice. I did that for usseewa and it turned out okay. Well most of the work is already done. The first 100 submissions are all lined up, and I just need to clean and line up the newer ones, which should only take a few hours. I then need to level everyone equally, which will probably take 10 minutes, provided my old macbook doesn't melt, using rx8's batch processor and their loudness control plugin. It lets me set target integrated/short term lufs (essentially, loudness) and peak levels and automatically adjusts the gain to match that, and I can do all 130+ files at the same time. After that, I'll split everyone into groups and have each group sing half a verse and all the choruses.
I'll also need to sort out the adlibs at the beginning, during the solo, and at the end because there are ~30 people talking at the same time during those parts. What I'll probably do is pan and move people all around and cut out some frequency ranges for certain people to stand out when it's their turn to speak.
The first thing I did, before any submissions, was clean up the instrumental because there were some weird resonances, so now all I have to do is carve out some space for the vocals and glue it all together. Might use this opportunity to test out some new plugins.

Did this in the parking lot of my local mall and got pulled up on by security and told to go somewhere else.
There's a lot of pops in it, recorded it on my iphone. Was running out of time, so that's the best I have. Might be too egregious to include, but I wanted to try because I knew I'd regret not entering a submission as soon as I listened to the final product.

I am not a professional, pretty baby-tier in audio, but I have had to make do with janky, poorfag gear for some projects. You want to do your best to...
(1) Avoid "clipping" (that is, input is so loud that you lose data and distort sounds).
(2) Avoid outside noise and reverb, basically prevent anything except your voice from being recorded.

For (1) It's better for the result of your hardware and software setup be too quiet in quiet moments than too loud in loud moments. The two controls for this are first, on the software side: test singing loudly, check for clipping, and scale down any gain, or input volume or "mic boost" or whatever your OS calls it. Then second, just physically moving the mic further away (within reason, i.e. you move from 6 inches from the mic to 12 inches, not 6 inches to 4 feet). Since you have a headset, you have less control over that, and the way the mic is built it probably relies on you being pretty close to it anyway? So move it from right at your mouth to 1 inch above or below or whatever. Someone with better knowledge of the differences in microphones please chime in. I've only ever fucked with entry-level condensers and some conference-room-style directional mics (surface mics I guess?).

For (2), as prodanon suggests, dampen noises and reverb by recording with clothes or blankets around you. If you have a desktop, draping a towel or blanket over your head, and over to the monitor, to make a tiny "sound room" can do wonders. Just make sure the blanket DOES NOT TOUCH the mic, as that will cause awful noises.
