I have an extremely unreasonable pet peeve about vtuber designs, I think large sleeves suck and too many vtubers use them
They obscure too much of their arms, if their models can move their arms around the sleeves obscure the screen and if they ever get a 3D model they cause clipping issues 100% of the time
It would be no big deal if this was limited to one or two chuubas but they're so common

korone's design is 100% what a vtuber design should be imo. it's simple but not plain, tasteful asymmetry, nice color palette and a cohesive design that demonstrates at least manages to convey some aspects of her personality (playful, energetic, etc).
it's cute, endearing, easy on the eyes and effective. not overly sanitized, gives opportunity for some sex appeal but isn't whoreish at all.

Recognizability and uniqueness have nothing to do with being well-designed. Pic related ticks almost all your boxes and is still the most hideous design I've ever seen.

There is nothing wrong with simple, even generic, designs. Whether a model is well-designed and whether a model will help you stand out amongst the sea of vtubers are two completely different things. For me, visual appeal and the integration of the character's theme into their design are all that matter. The obsession with uniqueness is what leads to the creation of monstrosities.

Having lots of detail isn't a bad thing, as long as the uniqueness of the design doesn't hinge on it. I think that's covered by OP's "recognizable even when simplified". If you can sketch them from memory within a few seconds in a game of Gartic Phone and everyone recognizes them, it's probably a good memorable design.

Best design? That's Fubuki, easily.

She can wear any costume and you'll recognize her.
Her color palette is very pleasant and easy on the eyes.
She does not rely on excessive detail or accessories to stand out, and she looks like herself in any outfit she wears, even when it's drastically different.
Anyone can draw her and you'll recognize it.
She has a clear outline.
Her design isn't busy, you can memorize it easily.
But it is not simple or generic either, it has character.

Everything about Fubuki is perfect. She can be a protagonist in a long-running franchise of any kind all by herself. Other vtubers have their strengths and weaknesses, but FBK is balanced to absolute perfection, and no one topped her yet.

I think Ina has the best vtuber design. I was a big fan of the artist that drew her long before her design was revealed and thought her design was amazing when she debuted. I came to like Gura more over time though (2nd fav design in EN) and stopped watching Ina. Now I think they're both worthless cunts and wish the design had gone to someone better.

A lot of the designs posted here honestly suck. Put them in a basic white T-shirt, take away some accessories, and draw them in another art style and they look like generic anime girl #872. The only truly unique ones I've seen (without going into over designing territory) are Ina and Elira + Selen. They're recognizable even when using different hair colors.

Gura's base design is nice, but once you remove her shark hat and hoodie she turns into a generic character. If the shark hat is left on however, you'd be able to recognize her anywhere. Same goes with Mysta and his hat. To be fair though, it's hard to make human characters unique without some sort of accessory added (I don't count Ina and Elira/Selen as human).

Not being unique is ok though as long as it's recognizable. Botan's head looks like a regular white-haired cat girl, but throwing on her outfit just makes it work. It's not a flashy or very unique design and is on the simpler side, yet it's very recognizable. Sometimes simple is best.

I genuinely, unironically think pic related's got a great character design.
Some artists are good illustrators, others are good character designers. Generally, vtuber mamas/papas are expected to do both of those things competently. The main issues with Magni's model stem from the fact that the illustration is dogshit, but the character design itself is solid. This is proven by how fan art manages to make it look appealing while still highlighting the unique eccentricity of the design and its very recognizable elements like the purple halo and the mechanical arms.
