Yeah, that's a throwback. It's a great idea, too, whale songs are known for being heard from far away, and they can relay the info. Maybe there were times whence chumbuds waged wars against the whales in the great struggle of cunny vs thick.

Thank you! I'm still not sure whether being pulled into the cockpit through a throat by a tentacle is a bit too horrific or it's something you'd quickly get used to. I thought it was neat to make it a literal mouth, paralleling the figurative maw of the Belym mech. I'm not sure if that's how I got the idea, or I just noticed the similarity afterwards.

No but if I’m gonna be miserable anyway I might as well put it to use so that somebody could actually benefit from it
I guess having it be a literal mouth makes sense both biologically and symbolically (there’s only one other entrance and that has a very different symbolism) even though I kinda think having multiple tendrils might be better in terms of guiding the pilot and distributing the pulling force, or maybe it’s just me finding Ohmu cool

Ohh that's a good point... The Kalma is meant to be a basic, cheap machine, so maybe more performance-oriented and expensive Daemons would have more elaborate insertion systems? With multiple tendrils for better control, while the lower-grade models just have the one tentacle tug you in.
>there’s only one other entrance and that has a very different symbolism
I was close to using the word "sphincter" as a descriptor, which would have been anatomically accurate, but I didn't want that connotation kek.

I don’t actually dislike /uoh/ or drugs even if they aren’t my thing. It’s just that a hard drug that supposedly targets loli (given how >>52148201 is worded) is gonna have some nasty implications even if it’s not something made by /uoh/ for its own goal
Having more control surfaces is always a good idea! Especially for Daemons with high MIQ because they can handle more subsystems and also control what tendrils are within reach at any given moment to avoid overloading the pilot. I guess they can also work as shock absorption if they get hit by something that doesn’t kill them

Mixing children and drugs doesn't lead to good socioeconomic outcomes! But I think in this case it's by design.
Yeah! That's something neat about biological vs mechanical design. In a mechanical device you always want to keep "moving parts" to a minimum, because something that gets broken requires repair or a replacement part. On the other hand biological system usually have self-healing properties inherent, since they had to grow themselves in the first place. So you can have a lot more moving bits that can just be re-grown if necessary. Like your stomach lining, or how you have muscles along the entire length of your intestines.
Though obviously you can implement self-healing features in mechanical systems, and biological systems can undergo damage that can't be repaired.
I've got some ideas for shock absorption in the cockpit! That thing about wet-running cockpits, I think I'm going to nab the LCL thing from NGE and have the whole thing flooded with oxygenated fluid, to help cushion potential concussive damage, as well as other advantages (For the high performance, military Daemons where that would be useful). The cockpit organ would also be suspended on elastic tendons so that impacts to the carapace are dampened. The tendrils can have a role too, like form the shock-absorbing seat or something like that.

I guess the thing’s that while homeless children dabbling in street drugs are always a thing they usually don’t come in droves unless something has gone horribly wrong with the whole society like some Eastern bloc countries in the 90s. Maybe it’s not an uncommon sight in the lower levels of HoloNiJo if we go with the usual hive world tropes. Then again maybe urban decay’s inevitable even when the world isn’t deliberately dystopian
While I won’t be surprised if someone out there have self-repairing machines I do think what you describe gives a nice organic technology feeling! I always feel like having curvy stuff moving around and presenting specific control surfaces feel very biological even if it’s not strictly limited to that. Daemons with high MIQ can probably control what to present actively while those with lower MIQ might just remove ones that aren’t commonly used (unstimulated)
I don’t know if normal liquid actually helps with absorbing shock. I feel you would want something sticky (which I guess LCL should be given its components, same with a lot of organic secretion which would apply here) if not jello-like so that you can spread the impact force over a longer period of time. Tendrils should work though if you think of them like springs!

>Daemons with high MIQ can...
Oh, that's good! There could be models of Daemon that share the same genome, but difference in cerebral capacity leads to some components not developing because the Daemon is not able to use them, a bit how your tendons can degrade if they don't get used/stimulated often enough. Like a Civic DX vs a Civic LX, same model but one is expressed more fully.
Normal liquid would have some interesting effects! For example, a big source of lethality when a human is next to an explosion is blast lung injury, which occurs when a shockwave travels through the body and causes an overpressure in the lungs, destroying them in the process. This happens because air can easily change volume. If the lungs are filled with incompressible liquid instead, it would be a lot more difficult to get some kind of blast lung injury.
Also, it can act as a really good pressure suit. Basically, when the body undergoes an acceleration, the tissues and blood of the body squish down while air moves above it, ordered by density. If the space is filled with a liquid with the same density as the body, all the fluid gets pushed down equally, applying an equal pressure on the surface of the body. That means less deformation. Apparently, with all the air replaced with liquid you could handle accelerations above 20G without other modifications!
The liquid breathing rabbithole goes deep... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6401050/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_breathing#Space_travel

In the realm of dreams, a memory stirs,
Of a time when youth knew no fears,
In the station's hangar, where wonders reside,
Tuval found solace, his heart open wide.

Ol' Root Ailbhe, mechanic wise,
Extended his kindness, a heartfelt guise,
Allowing Tuval to roam and explore,
The Kalma's carapaces, he did adore.

A "shop's rat," they called him, with joy in his eyes,
He climbed and he played, reaching the skies,
The cockpit, once entered, a world to behold,
A sanctuary of dreams, stories untold.

Oh-Four, the Daemon, its optics concealed,
In slumber it rested, its presence revealed,
Tuval, with trepidation, ventured inside,
The creature's throat beckoning, open wide.

Ailbhe's voice echoed, comforting and clear,
Assuring Tuval, banishing his fear,
With hesitant steps, he reached for the light,
The tendril embraced him, gripping tight.

Through the tunnel he soared, weightless and free,
Guided by Oh-Four, a journey to see,
The cockpit awaited, a place to be bound,
Its tendrils secured, Tuval safe and sound.

But darkness embraced him, claustrophobic and tight,
The space that once comforted, now filled with fright,
The buttons and handles, a labyrinth of control,
A reminder of limits, the yearning for a larger role.

In the depths of confinement, Tuval's spirit waned,
Longing to escape, his freedom restrained,
He released the joysticks, surrendering his command,
Seeking solace from Ailbhe, a helping hand.

"How do I get out?" he pleaded, voice trembling low,
Ailbhe's guidance, the answer he sought to know,
Pressing the buckle, a release from his plight,
Freedom regained, his burden made light.

From the Kalma he emerged, back to the real,
The rushing air whispered, an ethereal feel,
Ailbhe, the caretaker, concerned for his kin,
Offering comfort, as the cycle begins.

But now in the present, a conflict arose,
Ol' Root Ailbhe, rules he strictly imposed,
Tuval yearned for more time, to master his craft,
To hone his skills, the simulator's path.

A poem I shall write, to express his plight,
Of memories cherished, of courage and light,
For in the realm of verse, his story shall be told,
A testament to growth, a spirit bold.

In the universe's embrace, where dreams intertwine,
Tuval's journey continues, seeking horizons divine,
With Ailbhe's guidance, a sapling transformed,
He'll overcome obstacles, his spirit reformed.

Nice line, I feel like I read that from somewhere... AI does love the word plight, huh? Thank you AI.

Now I’m starting to understand why some inventors regretted their inventions

>>52220163
It’s from a fan game (Kronii is hungry). I think it’s actually flour or something
Despite what >>52195861 said the idea of it being /uoh/-adjacent did give me the idea of incorporating Warburg effect into the concept. I don’t think inhibiting lactic acid fermentation actually stunt someone’s growth (hence it also have a hormonal effect that also gives it a “practical” use)
The hunger for sugar’s a logical extension of how the drug works since it probably burns up a lot of glucose in the process but I guess it’s also similar to the munchies

>>52220698
I still love you!

>>52221237
I guess it would make sense for your people to peddle drugs that happen to make people crave sugar

Ah sapling, Ailbhe ended up having classic tragic backstory, what do you think? One's space hive being damaged to inhabitability would be a good reason to separate a sapling from it, I think, and I guess it leaves space for a reclamation arc later on.
>>52222014
Yeah, working in the growth-stunting effect was a pretty elegant way to hit the /uoh/ angle, good stuff! TIL that's called Warburg effect.

It was really well written anon!
I'm new to deadbeat lore, but I really like the the kind of mech Ailbhe was taking care of, thats a really cool concept and it super fits something a sapling would gravitate toward.
Also the interactions with Tuval were really sweet. Kind of reminded me a lot of the scene from Spirited Away where Chihiro meets Kamaji and Kamaji is trying to tell her how the bath machine works and how to help out.

>tragic backstory
not the angle I would have gone with for a group of homeless saplings, but it still works. I'll try to keep it in mind for any possible future space-/uuu/ lore. the space hives saplings would have are absolutely massive so they can take advantage of their own microgravity (and some Lagrange points) to keep their own atmosphere. So it would take some incredibly destructive event to wipe out a whole hive, but theres definitely some room in there for other possibilities.

Looking forward to where this goes anon!

I'm very glad anon, thank you! I feel like a sapling's familiarity with organic "equipment" would make a transition to taking care of the Daemons easier, even if it's a less natural form of bioengineering, he might even have more affinity with them than most other mechanics.
Oh, from what I recall that is a sweet scene, I should rewatch it, maybe I can continue channeling those vibes for the relationship between those two. There's definitely a cute replacement paternal figure thing going on.
I don't envision Plaiduaine Hive as being completely annihilated, but rather damaged enough that large sections of it have been rendered inhospitable, while active combat (probably some hellish space vietnam shit from the invader's POV?) is still ongoing in others... basically setup for a future story, maybe. All that leading to a portion of the population having to escape to save their barks.
>not the angle I would have gone with for a group of homeless saplings
Ohh, I'm curious what you'd have thought of first, might give me more insight into saplings.

The temporary energy boost and adrenaline rush can certainly increase the user’s combat prowess, but the psychological urge to “spend” the newfound energy (and the other half of fight-or-flight response) could hempen its use unless unless the user’s disciplined enough to control their impulses (that or take more drugs to keep their emotions in check). When I wrote that part I’m thinking that it’s most commonly used by stereotypical bath salt zombies and violent gang mooks that don’t care about trivial things like discipline, complex tactics, or long-term survivability
