You seem to have figured out on your own that the 4070/4070Ti are the ACTUAL xx60 series cards for the RTX 4xxx gen.
nVIDIA got caught with their pants down and "unlaunched" the 4080 12 GB, but they still did EXACTLY what they were fucking planning to - move every single tier down by one because they are greedy.
ie. the 4060/4060 Ti are arguably objectively WORSE for SD than the 3060/3060 Ti, because they should've been fucking called 4050/4050 Ti - re: ridiculous bus width, 8 PCI-e lanes, amount of VRAM, etc.

I have a 4070Ti since January. On 1440p the 12GB VRAM is not much of an issue and I think it will be the case for the foreseeable future.
I still can't fathom why people are frothing about not enough VRAM on games like RE4 Remake which IMO doesn't even remotely looking like it consumes 14GB of VRAM on its max settings yet at the same time has no issue running the notoriously buggy Cyberpunk 2077 with RT Overdrive on.

I'm on a 4790K clocked to base 4.20GHz and a 1070 GTX.
It costs so much money to go from a base clock of 4.20 GHz to a base clock of... 3 Ghz? What the fuck? And only 8 cores can even do that, the rest is at 2.2 GHz? What? Is this a fucking joke?
And from 8GB of VRAM to 12GB, just a little bump up...
I threw down a quick build and it came to 2500€. I might find cheaper alternatives here and there and bring it down but I don't see it going much below 2000€.

The 4790K on launch was considered a monster. The 1070GTX on launch was also considered a proper high end card.

Pretty sure it's just the nature of the beast. Full body images have a smaller face to learn from. You can inpaint a new face at a higher res or let adetailer inpaint for you.

I'm looking at the 13900K, should be the modern counterpart of the 4790K. It costs almost twice as much as the old one did new though.
I'm reading a bit and apparently it doesn't really run at those abysmal base speeds, so maybe it's not as bad as my initial impression.
Still, it's twice as expensive.
And then the GPU feels like a small upgrade but costs as much as everything else combined.
Everything is so much more expensive. Even the cases and fans cost almost twice as much as when I built my last PC, for equivalent ones.

And there's more to GPU than its clock speed and VRAM. The 4070Ti's performance lies somewhere between a 3090 and a 3090Ti while having half the market price. Though if we're talking about prices, if you decide to buy a new GPU today, you'll need to just bite the bullet because we're in an era when they manufactured the GPUs during all these combined : Chip shortage due to drought in Taiwan, supply chain disruptions due to pandemics, fuel price hike due to war in Ukraine, and the Cryptocurrency mining boom.
Plus right now we're entering the AI boom where it will definitely jack up the GPU prices again because NVidia is alone up there with 0 competition in the AI sector.
I would gladly help you with build recommendations but it's almost my sleeptime soon.

I'm looking at the specs and I seriously doubt that. It looks fairly similar, some improvements and this very low base clock speed I don't entirely understand.
Maybe better in benchmarks, but those are hardly equivalent to real world use where single core performance is king, unless you're doing some kind of video/audio editing.
That one is cheap though, I'll give you that much.

Right now I'm on a 1070 GTX with 8GB VRAM. It's actually fine for gaming, I don't mind turning some settings down or settling for stable 30FPS instead of 60. I have yet to find a game I can't play at least on high with a couple settings on medium at 4K.
It would mostly be an upgrade for AI gens. And on that front, 12GB aren't that big of an upgrade over 8, certainly not enough to justify the insulting price tag. Tensor cores would probably make gens a fair bit faster, but again, it's a ton of money.
An option would be to keep my current case and cooler, keep my GPU and just change the motherboard, CPU and RAM.
That should help for gaming where I think the CPU is the main thing holding me back a little bit (stuff like Stellaris comes to mind, or emulation).
Then I can sit on my 1070 for a few more years and hope something changes in the GPU world.

Well it's hard for me to recommend GPU solely to generate AI since I have a strong tendency to push something for a gaming purpose. If it's just for AI purposes I think a 3070 or even a 3060Ti would do just fine. But considering that you also want a VRAM upgrade, all the upgrade options left for you are really either just a 3080 or a 4070 (leaning more towards the 4070). And I think if you're fine playing medium on 4K, either one of those two will definitely elevate your gaming visual.
More tips from me : Avoid overspending on Motherboards, AM5 is kind of overpriced right now. Stay on DDR4 3600 if you want to save up more, DDR5 RAM and Motherboards is also kind of overpriced right now. And stay away from gen 5 SSDs, those thing are hot, like literally hot.

I think I'm just going to sit on the 1070 for now, it does fine for gaming and "well enough" at AI generation to suck it up an deal with it. It's not like I can't get a different GPU in a couple years, connector isn't going to change.

I already upgraded my main disk to an NVME less than a year ago so I'd keep that. I want to replace my two storage HDDs with a single bigger storage HDD and a (probably 2TB) SSD for games and programs that don't quite need the NVME's speed but could use more than a 7200 RPM disk's.
The HDDs are also getting on in years, so that's also a reason to change them.
Either way thank you for the suggestions. I'll consider it more but that's probably how I'll proceed. A nice new powerful future proof CPU, motherboard and RAM trailing that. New disks to pair up with my NVME. Sit on the GPU for a couple years.

I know, that's why it's a mindset that I have to actively adopt, since by default I'll just revert to Chuuba = Actor all the way through, whereas I'm sure there's some layer of stagecraft to the performance and character, even if it's very closely based on the actor (or I guess actress most of the time) themselves.

I guess it's probably better this way, helps keep them at an arms length at all times, even if it's not the most accurate. I personally think that there is a character that works as a base and a well for the person behind it to take from when needed, but a lot of it does come from the real person.

yeah I created a booth account and didn't expect people to actually subscribe there. after all, it is AI generated, everybody can recreate it, why should you pay for it?
