It's a pretty obvious fact that feels almost unnecessary to even bring up.
Talent is something that can help a vtuber enhance her content. Either by making her singing better, or letting her come up with better ideas, or making her more charismatic. Those are all factors that lead to stronger viewer retention and word of mouth advertisement.
But it's not the only thing that matters and there's a curve to it. With 0 talent no vtuber will ever amount to anything but a super talented vtuber won't achieve much without hard work and consistency.
Consistency matters a lot for viewer retention and retention is a key part of growth. It should also go without saying that a streamer that does not stream is not going to grow much and will even lose viewers. But there are other factors at play too. I'd say game choices and variety of content are related to this as well. Some vtubers can grow from a single game if they latch to a big niche like Apex but overall variety works out better and being limited to few games or unpopular choices is a handicap. I can't be too specific without risking a ban but there was a case of a vtuber who was mostly dedicated to a single shooter and had ok numbers but once she went corpo and branched out to many more games she did much better. Jelly's previous game selection was mostly a single game which isn't really popular enough to have its own niche so it's a big debuff.
Character matters, not as much as some indies wish it did. A cool 10/10 character won't make up for lacking talent and work ethic but it will make people more likely to check a stream out, draw the vtuber or repost art of her and a bad character can even turn off potential viewers as well.
You should check Jelly's old character and it should be very obvious what sort of impact it had on her.
I don't expect her to do crazy good numbers now but she will likely do aroudn 300 which is "good" by Phase Connect standards. Generally corpo vtubers tend to have numbers similar to others in their branch.
Most Nijis are 1k-3k and most Holos are 3k-10k and Most Phase are 200-400 and most Idol are 300-400 and most Kawaii are around 100 and so on.
Indies can be all over the place and the algorithm and their social networking has a huge impact on it. As well as simply when they debuted, the market is saturated now but those whos started early had the advantage of less competition and a head start.
Talent in the end is a factor but it is not directly related to views.
The next 30k ccv Gura killer of HoloEN3 could be a 30 view today and talent alone wasn't enough to make her a big success but with the right model and marketing push she could reach the sky.
Hypothetically speaking of course, Cover will probably just hire big names like they usually do and hope they don't quit, become lazy or get a tummy hurt again this time.
