If you're small you'll get people that will comm you literally whatever, even if it's not in line with what you normally draw. It's because their objective is to just find whatever small artist so they can get something for cheap. It might be even worse if you're particularly easy to push around.
As you grow your following and get people that follow you for what you do, you'll get comms for things you're more familiar with. If you have a track record and portfolio to show they'll also be a lot more reasonable.

On the one hand it seems like it would be sort of fun to build up a fanbase, etc but it also seems like a time consuming hassle. I have a day job that pays well and keep me busy so I'll probably never do it. It does take a lot of time and is definitely a commitment. I started during covid when I got laid off so I had nothing to do but grind art, getting a little bit of money is a nice bonus. Now I'm doing it with a day job as well and it's pretty difficult, but it's either this or vidya I guess.
