Last time it was discussed I think the consensus was, submission to a contest email with every fic being released at once after the submission period with the votes being counted via a polling website.

I was there during the discussion. There was a point where it would depend on the amount of fics that get submitted. If we don't get that many fics, we just release them all at once after the submission period and allow some time for voting. If we get a lot of fics, we stagger the release by category. One anon would still have to manage it, though

I think it would depend on how many stories we get. To test the waters I believe it’d be best to only have two categories, because imagine if each category only got three stories or something. That’d make the whole contest pointless. If the first contest is a success, we can add more.

Also, how much time are we giving the readers to read and vote before the next lot of stories come out? I still believe it’d be better to have the contest go for a month, but writers can submit their stories to the “contest archive” at any time where it’s free to view by anyone. So obviously, stories finished first will be available first. I feel like hiding the stories then releasing them all at once would overwhelm readers and not every story would get read.

A quick read about shark mating and pregnancy though is interesting. Tiger Sharks do it about every three years, with a mating season typically in January. A lot of what the other anon said. Comments are not super common, and I don't think it's as much of a open forum as here. Although, I have received a couple funny comments on some of my recent updates, so I might try to engage them and see if anything more comes of it. The metrics are cool to see, but the main audience and traffic heavily favors things with smut, yuri, and shorter pieces. You can get views and people might enjoy what you put out there, but if it's not primarily about the things I mentioned, you'll feel dwarfed compared to things that are just like "Ame and Kroni find out they have a love for each other like they never expected." A secondary archive is also nice. The limitless number of character tags is also a great thing, which I didn't appreciate until I started uploading to fanfic net as well to find out they don't allow for more than 4 character tags, which is baffling to me. That stuff is more about ao3 as a tool, and not the community itself though.

For the most part, no one treats ao3 as their main fanfic community. Barring a few exceptions, no one really comments over there. So while it makes sense as a secondary fanfic archive, it doesn't play host to a writing community outside of the people that also use it for fanfic storage.
