The thing is because the major Western interest in vtubers came from Hololive, they started out holding like 90+ of the entire market cap viewership and had nowhere to go but down if they couldn't grow the base, which they didn't (which I'd blame a lot on management but also the talents getting complacent/not caring). Thing is regardless of the current state of things, Holo is I think set to remain dominant for a long time if not indefinitely because when people get bored with it and find other stuff, they don't all go to the same places, they find different indies or small corpos and filtrate out. No one singular thing poses a rival to it, if NijiEN couldn't do it probably nothing can. So it'll be kind of impossible to look at any one indie or corpo and go "these guys are what overcame Hololive" so much as various chuubas got various percentages.

It's kind of like how the Roman Empire didn't collapse all at once but in pieces over time.

It's just like with video games, movies, or anything really. Hololive and Nijisanji, Marvel and DC, Nintendo and Sony, etc.
The big corpos are either completely soulless and boring, or overly preachy and "woke", while in both cases the quality of the product continues to steadily decrease while marketing and shill operations ramp up to historical highs.
In almost every field, these days the actual good content made with real heart and soul is found in the indie and small tier sector. Yeah it's not as flashy or bombastic, but it's real and actually means something, instead of focus tested lowest common denominator garbage.
