Things are going to get very interesting in the next few years as AI gets good enough to fully replicate human social interaction.
I think in a decade we'll go full circle, AI will replace e-girls and vtubers alike to such an extent that pure honest whoring will come back in fashion and the ones who are genuinely talented at it will rise back to the top. I don't think AI will replace regular e-thots, vtubers, etc. - it will likely co-exist and become a facet of monetisation for them in the sense of allowing people to interact with a simulacrum of their oshi while waiting for their next stream.
The underlying, subconscious reason, why men are bothering watching these girls is because their reproductive instincts tell them to. They are a surrogate for a real thing they can't have. But the idea that behind the facade there 'is' a real woman they could in theory date, have children with, etc. is a big selling point - even if it is not an explicit part of the experience. A purely virtual experience in the form of watching or interacting with an AI does not deliver on that end, so it will always play a subordinate role.
