Why is talking about previous works/life of vtubers so shunned?
Seeing their progression makes me like them even more as it reinforces belief that their success didn't happen overnight or fell into their laps, but was the result of years long work

>> No.493385

Part of the appeal of VTubing is the anonymity. You can be whoever you want to be without the issues that come with giving more of your identity out (appearance, name, etc). You’re essentially playing a character (though with less of a distinction than other mediums). Breaking the character is seen as taboo (similar to professional wrestling, the term is “keyfabe” I believe), and if previous identities were leaked it could be bad PR (if you’re a family friendly clean creator and your past work was super raunchy and offensive for example) and if the identity has anything to do with you IRL, it could lead to harassment in the real world.

>> No.493607

There's a few talents in Hololive I've been following since way before and yeah the way it's super secret just makes some people way more likely to legit doxx them, not just watch their old videos because they know who the talent is. In some cases, like Calli or Gura, they were so big before it's kinda hard to not wink wink nudge nudge about it.

>if the identity has anything to do with you IRL, it could lead to harassment in the real world.
I feel like this is the single biggest point, mainly specifically because japanese stalkers can more readily find and reach their targets, and there seems to be a greater amount of otakus going full creeper than american celebrities, for example.
That said, if a person came into vtubing with one of their biggest reasons being "I never wanted to show my face", it's definitely fucked up. One of the more disturbing roommate things I've seen was a chuuba who had a public event (that wasn't them being the "star" i.e. giving a performance or something) where they got filmed. Like, that chuuba wasn't trying to be a performer, and that video was an intrusion into what was just them being in public, not like them intentionally trying to be the center of the video's attention.

The appeal of Vtubing in general is that the character you see before you can be viewed as a separate person in a way. It's a way of content creation that allows you to don a 'mask' that for a lot of people takes away a lot of burdens that their real identity would bring with them. (things like appearance, age or previous works)
Meaning that if you talk about any previous identities (IRL or past CC names. this is what we refer to here as "roommates") it takes away from the Vtuber.

Part of the appeal of Vtubing was doing idol-like work... until Western trash came into the scene, now it's a mixed bag of SJW, lightweight feminism and vaginacentric idle talk. Since those cunts pretty much exploded the genre completely, we might as well talk about their past lives honestly.

>Why is talking about previous works/life of vtubers so shunned?
But it's not? Marine herself is a good example of this. She's talks all the time about how she was prison gay while in high school, tried to be a mangaka and couldn't hack it, how she was slaving away as a lonely OL for a black company before she became a Holo, etc. Yes, she never comes out and says her old NND name, but that's probably just because she doesn't really want to and not because she has anything she wants to hide. Some of the others are even more open than Marine about it. Noel has accidentally called herself Danchou before at her other job, and Pekora's old identity is literally in her corporate profile.

It's just a standard set by Kizuna Ai and the OGs. The VTuber is to be treated as its own entity separate from the talent behind the screen. The Vtuber concept borrows a lot from both idol culture (kayfabe and parasociality) and Japanese Internet anonymity norms (it's more common in Japan for content creators to either be wearing masks / not show their face in their videos).

When you combine these aspects together, you get a content creator that's free from a lot of the normal negative stuff that Western content creators face and they can focus more on doing what they wanna do.

These posts nail it. >We're being entertained by staged personalities, whereas the IRL people may or may not behave very differently, for the reasons already mentioned. I do not think it is fundamentally different from how streamers or western youtubers feel about their roles as entertainers, it's just emphasized much more. That said, I really want to think about the vtubers as the characters they are meant to portray, and not the dirty laundry attached to them.

The 4chan you're thinking of was a product of a time when the internet wasn't serious business. Nobody was making their living by having an audience for playing video games. Discussion about real people was only for the real freaks like Chris Chan. For better or for worse, part of what makes the concept of vtubers work is that the person on the other side of the screen is a puppetmaster, and the character you (are supposed to) care about is the avatar. What do you watch a puppet show for?

When I play vidya or watch anime and there's a particularly good voice actor I will google them and try to find more about that person and maybe find more of their works. Vtubers are an even more extreme example because as a viewer who doesn't know anything about it, you wouldn't think they're playing a role so you'll develop a parasocial relationship, which will make you even more interested in who's the person behind the puppet.

This is a fair opinion. If everyone was like you, there wouldn't be a problem. The drive for secrecy really does come down to three things:
>protect the person's actual safety
>protect the marketing for the character
>protect the illusion of emotional attachment
Finding similar, quality content from someone you know is a quality creator is unfortunately a minority use case, but in those cases I don't think it's impossible to have a discussion.

Vtubers as a marketing stunt is genius. Since the real identity of the person is protected, she works like truly like a virtual gf and this is a psychological bombshell. I always like to think about it like this: A person who's irresponsible enough with their money as to send constant superchats or donations to a vtuber or streamer, is the kind of person who would've spent that money on useless shit anyways. Is it better if it goes to some company for whatever trash they provide to him or to an entertainer and their employer which enables many people to enjoy their content for free? Comes down to personal opinion I guess.

I don't know, man. I know stupid people will usually get fucked, but there are so many psychological forces going on it's hard to tell who's at fault and to what extent. Gacha are a whole different level of evil. They have reward algorithms specialized to try and get as many pulls from as many people as possible. I hate how these became so normalized in Japan.
