If there is money involved it's always like this. If you're submitting something to potentially be used officially as a design you're almost never going to own the copyrights to your submission. Art contests 90% of the time are scams, this is honestly more generous than most seeing as 5 people all get cash prizes of 1k, most of the time the winner is the only one who gets money but even then hololives contest doesn't offer any money for it's top prize and immediately restricts the winner from using that design by itself for any sort of monetization.

Ok everyone is only about half right. Travel and board was paid for because it was official work they were doing(3D showcase). Kiara’s album works in conjunction with sololives also official work like with Okayu. They do however give a budget for songs that is realistically nothing because for the most part all members pay out of pocket except ID. They’re a special case in that there country is dirt cheap while other members spend tens of thousands on a song mv because their understanding of money has been warped. In some cases they will fund something completely no matter the price but this is hearsay because I’ve personally only heard of this for 2 members and neither were girls so I don’t watch them and can’t prove it’s validity.

Most people do commission their own designs. The rigging is done in house because it has to be designed to work with the nijisanji app, it's the same as Hololives rigging. There is a specific app that only people who work for the company have access to, which means outside riggers can't really do anything for you.
