The mancubus in the catacombs went as I expected it would, I made that arena too small I think, it originally was going to be an archvile fight before I came to my senses and put something reasonable instead.

I don't think I'll start working on a new map right away, getting to the finish line with this latest one was mentally tiring for some reason so I'm going to do some scribbling and actually play some of the WADs I have to get a better feel for map design.

As long as the wad-maker wasn't retarded, most of the time playing a wad just involves a literal drag and drop operation onto the sourceport exe.
The only fenangling with files you really need to do is pointing the sourceport to your doom or doom2.IWAD file and that's it.
I'd say it's worth hassling over, doom has had 30 years of mappers and feature expanding ports to get some genuinely amazing experiences put into it, all for free.
The same is basically true of quake as well, though I think that one requires a bit more file managing iirc, I haven't played in a bit so forgive me if that's wrong.
