Do you understand Japanese? I see people say stuff like Fubuki or Korone being their favorites, or some Japanese indie. And I wondered if this board is full of people who actually know Japanese to a competent enough extent that they can watch streams. Or do you guys watch translated clips? How do you do it?

I understand enough to get by. Sometimes I have to let things slide because I can't keep up with fluent sentences the way I can with English but it is negligible.

clips of course, nobody here will ever be japanese

No Japanese here. Full on Marine clip fag, i still watch her streams sometimes tho. A person can still be charming even without you fully understanding who they are, that's just how society works.

i only watch streams and clips in japanese. i cant have interest in western vtubers for many reasons. id like to see the western version of korone who plays a bunch of old school and wacky games with a weird accent and expressions, even though she isnt my oshi.

her streams are incredibly fun. her style of talking doesnt fit clips because she talks like an announcer or an radio DJ, interpreting and logically explaining whats going on there.

I was already at a level where I could read or watch most weeb media I was interested in when I got into vtubers, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority. A good deal of people started making an effort to learn it after they met their oshi, but they're probably just a slightly larger minority too. I always assume most people have just some very basic understanding of moon and rely on translators.

No, you having an English oshi is understandable, because you still speak English. I think OP is asking about people who don't speak any Japanese whatsoever that consider a Japanese chuuba their oshi.

What is wrong with watching an english clip? If i want to check Botans rainbow pants clip i type it in english. You don't have to read the subtitles but it is easier to find and some clips are english only. I also watch CN and Spain clips, i don't know what the symbols mean and i don't know shit about spanish.

My oshi is a Japanese indie. I understand basic Japanese (still learning) and she understands basic English. I use both in her chat depending on the context. Last week she replied to one of my comments telling me my Japanese was getting better. It was pretty sweet.

>Do you understand Japanese?
For the most part yeah, I self-studied before vtubers became a thing and watched a lot of non-vtuber JP streamers so I ended up pretty well-equipped for this stuff pretty much by complete chance.
Glad I finally decided to stop putting it off, back in the day.

Towa is my oshi.
Some things about a person don't require language to be attracted to. I don't even watch that many clips of her, I just like twap and her singing.

I used to only watch clips but now I can understand the majority of Subaru in her talk streams because I've been learning. You really can learn Japanese by watching clips, following them on Twitter, using Google Translate (the romaji is very helpful), learning how to type in Japanese (on PC and mobile), and reading Japanese kids books. Plus whatever solid resource you want to employ.

>>4867497
Marine is still one I haven't cracked because she speaks so fucking fast sometimes, though listening to her now reminds me of when I started listening to Subaru so that's a good sign

>> No.4869282

>>4868495
>she speaks so fucking fast sometimes,
yeah but instead her pronunciation is very clear compared to others. also her japanese is pretty normal japanese, not stylised in an anime way, except for the case where she specially acts like that.

personally hope more people understand what shes actually talking about in her streams. most of her clips are about some lewd shit that is merely 10% of her actual contents.

-Polka's short videos like the legend of polka have subtitles
-Subaru puts subtitles herself in the talking streams that she auto translated
-Korone doesn't even need words, most of her stuff is the universal language of her beating the shit out of me

the rest I watch clips unless they are playing a game that I already know, like lets say fubuki playing henry stickmin or pekora playing FFX

>> No.4874871

I do, a teensy little bit. Fubuki and Korone is just great streamers period. Maybe that helped encourage people watching despite the barrier.
I do put on my oshi Watame and just have her talk live while I do other stuff, but if something I understand perks up and she's about to get into a shenanigan, I can tell and turn my attention to her live video for a little bit. Other than that, I also try to see clips that translates parts that I haven't watched, didn't understand, or accidentally miss out even when I had her audio on.

Doubt a trend hopper would get into Japanese culture or want to learn the language. They'll just leave with a surface understanding once the next thing catches on.
