Ive sent little superchats to vtubers on occasion despite my parents being a fucking pain in the ass about it and now theyre literally threatening to boot me out of the house for "wasting money". Ive tried explaining donations before but they only see it as a scam.

Donating to streamers is almost 1 to 1 the same as paying to see a stand-up comedy show. The only difference is you don't have to leave your house and the comedian is playing a game as they tell their jokes.

>> No.47693754

I mean it doesn't really seem that complex to me.
It's the same as throwing a dollar in the dude playing the guitar on the street's case.
Public entertainer working off of donations.
Of course for Hololive and the like at least, it's a little different because they also get a salary. But I still think it's somewhat noble to support artists and entertainers that you enjoy.

>> No.47693797

>>47693305
Ok at least youre chill about it.

Well technically it is a bit of a scam, but "technically" so is tipping at a restaurant. They're just both ways of expressing gratitude and appreciation for something.
Just make sure you're spending your own money. If it's your money, they have no right to say how you use it. If it's theirs, well, you'll obviously have to stop.

But yeah don't go crazy with it. Remember it's like tipping at a restaurant, not a replacement for female social interaction.

I should clarify im 28 years old. Yes i know that sounds really fucking embarassing but I do have a job, it is my money, and it really shouldnt be any of their business. But like I said before all my statements and shit go to her email and she sees everything. The real problem is that they dont realize me living on my own will basically slowly drain me of pretty much my entire life savings. The way I see it my 2 options are
>Be my parents bitches and not be able to send superchats because "my parents told me im not allowed to"

… how do your parents even know that you’re donating to vtubers? Did you bring it up or are you spending their money?
In any case, I guess I’m also a boomer even though I’m not even thirty because I’d have to side with your parents. Donating to vtubers is a complete waste of money. I’m a vtuber myself and agree with your parents.

Donations, especially those to vtubers who already get paid to do what they do, are there to take advantage of people who want the streamer to give one of their messages their undivided attention. It’s not exactly a scam, but it is very exploitative. You can enjoy vtubers just fine without ever giving us a cent.
Plus, come on man. How does it even make sense to donate money to people who are undoubtedly wealthier than you? If you’re living in your childhood bedroom you’re probably not in a position to be a patron of the arts right now.

The best advice I can give you is to find a better job and look into living on your own. I really don’t think you should be ashamed of yourself for still living there at your age, honestly, but I do think that you need to be honest with yourself about whether or not you’re still happy living there. I get the impression you’ve let this dynamic you have with your parents convince you that there is nothing better for you in life out there, and that just isn’t true.
You need to do something to advance your career. I’m just a little younger than you and also poor, but I know for a fact I’m not gonna get any richer by continuing to work dead-end jobs. There’s got to be something you can do for yourself to advance your career. You could also look into renting with a roommate, but I don’t fault you for discounting that.
In any case, you need to start planning for a future that doesn’t see you walking on eggshells around your parents every day. That’s no way to live.

>> No.47706721

>>47693219
tips like for a street performer but it's online

>> No.47706946

>>47693219
Anons are right that it's "tipping with a message," but that doesn't fully capture what it is, nor is it likely to get them to understand and believe you. However, all the same concepts existed in the boomer era, just with different technology, so a ll you have to do is make an analogy.
>Okay, mom/dad.
>Imagine you go to some bar and they have an unknown band playing live music for free.
>They have a tip jar on the stage.
>It's completely optional, but you can throw a few bucks into the jar because you appreciate the band's music.
>It's just the internet age version of that, but it has some additional benefits.
>The main difference is that you also get to attach a message to it as a form of audience participation.
>The band reads the messages in between songs. If there's not much to the message, they'll just thank you, but you can ask them questions, request songs. and if your message is comedic, they'll usually make a joke back at you.
>This part is basically the same thing as when the audience would send letters into David Letterman (or another boomer late night talk show host they know) and he'd make jokes about some of them in a segment for it.
>The band will try to read as many of the messages as possible without disrupting the flow of the show, but will prioritize messages attached to higher dollar amounts if there isn't time to read all of them.
>Many bands still actually take the time to read all of them after the show.
>You can technically yell at them from the crowd for free, but the odds that they're is going to hear you or be able to respond to you is comparatively very, very low, due to the number of people yelling, and time constraints.

Alternatively, it's not that different from a comedy club, either.
>Imagine a comedian has a tip jar on the stage while he does his act, and you get to attach a message to each tip you give.
>The comedian is reading the messages as he does the set, and there's a decent chance that he'll use your message to make a joke.
>Usually, people try to roast him, but they'll get roasted back themselves.
>Essentially, the audience gets to collectively participate in a form of low-commitment improv comedy as one half of a comedy duo, while the comedian does all the heavy lifting as the other half, and takes on the risk of bombing on-stage.
>By giving him material to work with, it keeps the show rolling, and the funnier and more involved the crowd is, the funnier the comedian can be.
It's clear that explaining superchats is not going to fix your living situation, but I hope this helps you somehow regardless.

>> No.47707432

>>47706946 (me)
Also, the comedian's show is free because enough people want to participate in the show that it's still profitable to let everyone in. The people who don't pay still spread word of mouth, which gets even more paying participants to come, creating a profitable cycle of business.

>> No.47707571

Don't listen to anyone telling you to explain it in some clever way. I know this type of parent. It will never work.
1. Drop the subject, stop it and never mention it again. Lay low for around a month, maybe more.
2. Eat out with friends a bunch. If you have no friends then coworkers.
3. Pay for the meal and say they can pay back with Venmo, since it's easier than splitting the check.
4. If asked by parents, just say you covered it/were paid back.
5. Transfer Venmo to PayPal.
6. Go from there.
This is how I made purchases before I became financially independent. It works as long as your rate of illicit spending is under a couple hundred a month on average and as long as your parents are not literally auditing each cent. If they're actually fucking accountants then you have to listen to the people telling you to gtfo of your parents' house somehow.

I'm serious here: Go join the Air Force or at worst Navy for a rate with Top Secret clearance, use the VA Loan to secure a cheap house, and you can either do your 20 years and retire comfortably or do your 4 to 6 year contract, then get out and work for the government. That's the only way you can get away from this bullshit. Also no matter how shit your job is please keep in mind that the juice is worth the squeeze at the end.

Here's a serious answer for you OP. If I was you, I would move my savings into a new bank account under my own name and email and shut the old one under her email down once it was drained of money (ideally a different bank too, and tell them not to allow your mom to access it)

if she complains tell her you're an adult and your finances are your business and no one else's

Honestly the fact that you haven't considered it is a little bit bizarre considering how your parents have been stalking your financial transactions

You’re a 28 year old man bitching about your parents. Do you not see how embarrassing this is? Why not try explaining to your parents that autonomy is important to you? If that’s hard then try negotiating a way to pay your share of the rent so you can buy your autonomy. These types of parents will make you dependent on them until the day you die so they can control you.

You're already off to a better start than the vast majority of millenials and zoomers. Still, I know things are really bad, as far as housing. Unfortunately, I don't have much first-hand experience in this area, but I'm aware that there are still moves you can make. Absolutely none of this is financial advice, and you should research and verify all of it yourself, because as I said, I don't know shit, and am mostly going from years old second-hand memories.

If you're set on a home, FHA Loans (Federal Housing Administration Loans) are an assistance for first time homebuyers, and can get you a very low down payment on a house, though they're not good for everyone's financial situation. Look into these. Whatever the case, to get an FHA loan, or any loan, you'll still need a source of income, so that comes first. You said you've been fired from jobs because of narcolepsy, but could you work a job where you get to set your own hours, or work from home? You're not going to bankrupt yourself if you have a low down payment, but you also might have to leave MA, depending on what's available where, how soon you need out (asap), and your credit.

Do you have a credit score? This is important, because it affects your ability to borrow, such as for a home loan. If your credit score is below 580, an FHA Loan would get you a down payment on 10%, which would mean $50,000 for a $500,000 house, and that doesn't include numerous other associated costs. If your credit score is 580+, you can get a down payment of 3.5%, which means $17,500 for a $500,000 home. If you don't have a credit score, or have a low score, there are guides on YouTube on how to build credit without spending anything. Generally speaking, you'd start by getting something called a secured credit card. If it comes up, the idea that you have to spend money or keep a balance on the card to build credit is a myth. From there, the strategy would be to save money while building credit over the next several months as you look for a house.

You'll no doubt have to play it very hard but very safe for a while. Look into guides on FIRE (Financially Independent, Retired Early) and see if you want to do that. I know I mentioned YouTube before, but be careful with that, since MOST financial YouTubers turn out to be con men, giving legitimate advice mixed with some kind of ponzi scheme.

YES. It doesn't matter who your parents are. They're people, and even the best people can become greedy or desperate, depending on circumstances. My parents were similar to, and only a little less fucked than, yours.

See pic related. It's the norm at the moment. The combination of covid's economic impact plus the housing market bubble has utterly fucked young adults trying to get out of their parents' homes. If you managed it, consider yourself lucky to have had the knowledge and circumstances to do so.
>pay your share of the rent so you can buy your autonomy.
Fuck no. He shouldn't validate the idea that his autonomy is something to be bought.

uuu hello again auntie risuner! We got married/engaged or something a few months ago.
Honestly, they're boomer adults. Theyre just as stubborn as any other adult.
If you want to take control of your finances, it's always a good time to get your own credit card and build your credit score, assuming you're responsible with your purchases. It's also a good excuse to get your parents off your back.
Personally, I think it's fine to live at home or nearby. Hell I can't wait to move back home after college. I love my family and I can save some $$$. I'll try my best to find work nearby, and I can help take care of my aging parents and other siblings. I've given up any dream of owning a home in the USA.
If you really want to stay home, it's a great opportunity to get a degree or some vocational training nearby.
If you feel self conscious about not paying any sort of rent, maybe you could ask about pitching in to your family's mortgage (if you have one), and talk about future ownership.
blog post incoming
"Multigenerational homes" are pretty common outside of the US. I'm a 1st American (parents are from 3rd world) and that kinda rubbed off on me, the notion that you stay someone active in maintaining the househol. Absolutely not to the point of fully shared bank accounts though, fix that shit. My parents are getting old, I have special needs siblings, and we're ready to get through it as a family. It also doesn't hurt that the house is paid off, so I know I have somewhere to return to.
Also maybe phrase it like membership/subscription instead of donos, maybe that sounds better.
