It's often random but who knows, you just don't get into the shorts feed sometimes. I once posted a short and it got 0 views after a few hours. I deleted it and uploaded the same video with a different title again, it got over 30000 views. I don't recommend this method because yeah you can probably get penalized (it was my old experimental channel). The algo can be weird and there are tons of posts/videos about it. I currently prefer the normal video algorithm.

Archive likely has a dozen posts explaining this but I'll spoonfeed.

Streaming to both platforms splits your audience. People who watch streams on youtube generally don't watch them on Twitch and those who watch on Twitch don't generally watch on youtube. Once you get to a stage where subscriptions are a thing (usually faster on Twitch due to affiliate) those don't carry between services. So you'll end up with people subbed in one place while your content is at another. Twitch's chat experience is generally better but its vods and vod storage is ass. Youtube's chat experience is terrible but its vod storage and algo for discovery are excellent.

That's it. Only other considerations, basically, are that Twitch affiliates are locked out of moving their vods to youtube for about 24 hours from the day of stream.

It is, but you can at least link a YouTube channel and automatically dump your VODs there or download them and edit them.
You can also get around Twitch's time constraints for VOD storage by making "highlights" that are the length of the entire VOD.

Generally what people do to take advantage of both platforms is that they'll stream from twitch, but they'll use youtube for VOD storage, recaps and shorts. That way they get the algo working its discovery magic for them but directing a percentage of that viewership to the twitch. You're still not getting great conversion rates, but a lot of the most recently meteoric rises for vtubers have come from spamming shorts and shorter (20 minutes) videos on youtube while maintaining a discord and twitch channel for viewer capture.

You can, but the actual quality and storage duration of the VODs isn't the worst of it. Almost nobody just searches twitch VODs unless they just wanted to catch up on a stream they missed. Youtube will just add your uploads to the mysterious Algo and you'll get eyeballs on your non-live content without expecting somebody to just go out and find it on their own. Youtube is best suited for passive consumption content and as part of a new viewer content funnel to try to direct as many of those passive viewers to your actual stream on Twitch.

Every time I've seen somebody stream on both twitch and YouTube they seem to get pretty bad numbers . I'm unsure if that is just because they would have gotten bad numbers anyway, or if it caused them toet worse numbers than they would have. But I wouldn't be surprised if at least twitch secretly algorithmically punishes people who multistream to their competitors. They are extremely vindictive against those they view as a threat.
