The only time models looked worse was back at the very beginning with shoddy quality control, like the many faces of Sora (chubby Sora looked awful).

I think the best models are like makeup but for a chuuba's personality and character. They accentuate the chuuba's best qualities. Every time I see Old Lumi I sigh because of what was lost. Old Lumi made me excited for her musical prospects because it evokes an idea of a diva or idol(the Madonna kind). She looked ready for the stage. Her eyes were wonderful how they sparkled and glistened when she blinked. Her expressions could be so smug, begging for correction.

New Lumi is perfect at accentuating what I feel are her worst qualities. It isn't a coincidence that Veibae shares all of these qualities. Long before the redesign, I saw a stream where she did a perfect impression of Veibae. I joked that it was so good I almost cancelled my membership. I actually did when she got the redesign. You can get away with outfit changes and 2.0 sort of upgrades, but I don't think you can really cleanly get away with artist and total design changes as a vtuber, unless your first design was truly shit, or you're doing the whole graduating > redebuting as an entirely new thing process, or you're ironlung. Obviously the girl behind the model is ultimately more important to success of a channel than the model itself is, but I think a good portion of vtubers don't really appreciate how big of a deal the model is. Like they'll know that better model = more eyes in the beginning, but from there seems to be a critical misunderstanding that fans are attached solely to the girl and not the model, which for a variety of reasons just isn't true. Not that I'm implying they have be GFE or something, but it's like if you had a girlfriend and one day they suddenly went face/off and look like someone completely different. It's just not going to sit well with a good portion of your existing fanbase and you're ultimately just going to filter more people than anything. Maybe if you're already pulling big numbers and can eat and recover from the hit, but a brand overhaul is a very dangerous stunt for 2 and even 3views to try.
