Her keyboard has soldered in switches and not hotswap so this is the one mod she can do without having to get a desoldering kit.

A lot of keyboard mods are like this to change the sound signature of typing on it. This is among one of the simpler and more effective ones next to the PE foam mod which has you put a sheet of PE foam in between the pcb and switches that makes it sound like you’re dropping marbles as you type.

Yeah, that’s fair. I used to insist I needed a numpad too but found I didn’t need it nearly as much as I thought I did when I switched to a smaller board so I stuck with it. I still have the same functionality when I need it with a keypress combination though. That said these are called custom keyboards for a reason. No two keyboard is going to be the same because it’s meant to be customized to your personal preference. I’m sure there’s some crazy fucker out there somewhere who has theirs set up to type in l33tspeak on default.

I dunno, I just ended up learning how to touch type on the number row. Maybe I just haven't worked jobs with insane amounts of number entry, because any possible timesave from the numpad is lost by constantly needing that hand on my mouse to navigate the mandatory Access GUI. Plus, I'm overwhelmingly more used to laptop keyboards and their typical lack of numpad.

Having said that, I'm willing to bet the real reason why custom keyboards are overwhelmingly TKL or smaller is because...they have far fewer switches/caps to deal with when building and rebuilding them. Less work, and especially for switches it saves a sizeable chunk of money (caps are usually sold as sets for full size keyboards, so you rarely save money there).
