Thanks for the feedback! I did spend some time thinking on the setting, hopefully I can live up to the expectations. Characterization is something I struggle with a lot. You're pretty on point on Kurokami - I intended for her to be a bit more of an antisocial loner than she actually acts, plus some culture shock with the whole Kami thing, but I may have gone a bit too far.
You're right on the mark about the dark secret, even if it has been plainly stated a few too many times to count as a straight secret by this point. The specifics are probably getting explored two chapters from now
Hopefully her characterization will get more appealing once Anon can get past her initial antisocial behavior.

Alright, so I managed to finish the Fubuki route in the Hololive VN, but now I'm stuck on Okayu. Whenever I try asking her on a date, she turns me down. Is there a specific flag I missed? They're always a bitch to find.

Working on auntie fucking as much as I'm keeping up with uni and work. Last semester and all that.
I was facing a bit of writer's block, I'm sitting on 5k of scrapped bits for ALS. I decided to focus on a bit of Fubuki's and Anon bonding when Fubuki first became his babysitter.
I have a segment where Fubuki was a failed 3D idol, and takes up vtubing when she hears about it and receives a gift from her nephew that reignites her confidence, but I'm having trouble making her learn about vtubing in an organic way, natural way.
Plus I've been going over and over To be 17 again although I haven't felt the spark to write it as before.
Shit sucks, might disappear for 6 months and then post a chapter again.

When I've been stuck on a scene I was trying really hard to make work, more than a few times the answer was to NOT make it work. That was kinda my inner brain telling me that this wasn't the scene meant for this piece, so I found a new scene. The relief you get when you do that is like no other when you find the scene that was truly meant for your installation instead of what you were originally bent on. The right scene is out there somewhere anon, keep doing your best!

The problem with such a major plot point is that it's long-running; you can't adequately expand and close it within a few scenes, or even chapters. It sounds to me like it's something you've got to commit to if you want to include it, which may start to interfere with the main draw of your story.

This sounds like a pretty negative bunch of spiel to me, but as a big fan of this series, I'm quite biased and see the shift of focus as a threat to what I enjoy about the story, so take this post with a massive dose of salt. I don't really care about what Fubuki does as a day job; I have long since filed this story under AU and suspended any disbelief I have for her questionable income. I'm just enjoying seeing this house of cards being built... and waiting for the inevitable fall.

This sounds like a much more amenable plot device, as much of the backstory will simply be assumed by the audience who are already familiar with the real Fubuki. It can be used to create additional scenes without hogging the limelight, unless you want it to.

This was incredibly difficult to read, as if everything is a run-on sentence. The "questing guild" suggests you have a case of isekai poisoning. There's a self-contradiction where Flare seems to to fantasize about being impregnated despite being fully aware that it wasn't possible. I think it's fine being used as Lalatina dirty talk, but it really doesn't make sense to have that as thought monologue without acknowledging it.
Sometimes less is more, and it's definitely better to do away with the dense bricks of text so they don't bury the parts that people are reading for.

I've been going down a bit of a writing rabbit hole, and I've got to ask. This is probably really only directed towards very few individuals from here, but I ask nonetheless.

Do you enjoy the generic setting tropes (Tolkien-esque fantasy for example), or do you write them because it's what is familiar? Have you no desire to branch out, try something unique and make it something of your own? Every time I see something fun, I get the desire to try something new myself, I just haven't done it because I'm not someone who dedicates large amounts of time to writing, so I don't have the time for it. It depends on the individual tropes and whether I like them and/or think they're useful, really. Tropes are tools that help you write something that your readers understand without needing as much exposition, because you can rely on their existing knowledge instead of having to explain something they have never encountered before.
I'd say you should almost always include some generic setting tropes; including all makes you boring and derivate, including none makes the work too weird and hard to get into (putting a twist on familiar tropes or explicitly turning them on their head counts as "including" them).
That said, there's many contradicting common tropes for one kind of setting, so you have a lot of freedom to choose. Today's fantasy, while still ultimately derived from Tolkien, is so different from his work that reading LotR can feel fresh and unexpected when you're used to Warhammer, Warcraft, D&D, Elder Scrolls etc. Even the difference between the thoughtful, artistic, serious Gimli that Tolkien wrote and the Scottish loudmouth comic relief Gimli in the Jackson movies shows this.

This may just be my own perspective but for both writing and reading the 'generic settings' are pretty much best for 'junk food'/popcorn fics where the focus is more on having fun with characters and shenaniganry than with events with world shaking consequences.
Since yeah, you could strike out on your own, worldbuild up an original setting, but do you really want to bother with that when you just want to write out a fun adventure in a fantasy world or make a fanfic with characters you like/set in an already existing setting? Sometimes you just want to write/read a story that gets to the point and have fun with it.
As an example, think about this thread's generic setting. 20 minutes into the future Tokyo(ish) with vtubers that look exactly like their models irl. That's pretty much the setting that half of the stories here go with since it's the easiest way to tell a story about a the chuubas you like without it getting bogged down in bullshit neither you nor the audience really cares about.
