Hello there seems to be a misconception about the $1000 I spent on booth last night and a very unfortunate shitposter seems to be grasping at straws for several hours due to their own ignorance. The total amount I spent on booth does not equate to the total cost of the 1(ONE) singular avatar/model/outfit that I'm using. The anri base cost $50, obsidian outfit $30, ryu's sailor outfit that I use for the top cost $40. Now where did that total $1000 come from? Well you see I have MANY more outfits that I've put onto my character over the years as well as other characters I bought for funsies. (also supporting artists) Putting these things together was quite a learning experience and was a lot of work. But since I am my own technician now I can update my character whenever I want and that I think is a valuable skill as I don't need to beg an artist to waitlist me for several months in order to update my model.

So uh this all stemmed from me asking about how to position my silly hat.

Granted, you probably wouldn't want any of these people in your chat in the first place, but the idea that affiliation or even association with 4chan has no potential complications is definitely false, especially in the realm of networking, and especially in the modern anime space, which is mostly taking place on Twitter, which is now filled with expats from Tumblr. Audio equipment is an expenditure that you should somewhat future-proof. You can't get much for $100. Just a USB mic, which leaves you with a Blue Yeti or a Samson, which you will like for a while, but become dissatisfied with in a year or so. When that happens, you will still not have an audio interface, but you will need an audio interface to use mics that sounds any nicer. The first question to ask yourself is whether you are in this, (or any creative field that involves a microphone,) for the long-haul. If you think there's any chance you'll drop the hobby in a year, just get the USB mic. I started with the Blue Yeti in 2012-ish for that reason.

But if you think you're going to stick with it, and have the time and ability to save a little longer, then you should use Ebay to buy a used 3rd Gen Focusrite Scarlet Solo or 2i2 , and a used AT2020 (!!!XLR VERSION!!!). Note that the Solo does not have a separate volume knob for the headphones, like the 2i2 has, which means more fucking around with cables and settings. I didn't realize this when I got the Solo. The 2i2 has been way more convenient. Should be around $200 total. I say Ebay because they have excellent buyer protection, so you don't need to worry about buying it used. You'll also need a mic stand. There are cheap-ish desk arms on Amazon, but I don't know how good or bad they are. Pop filters are nice to have, but not necessary. Just speak at an angle instead of directly into the mic if you don't have one.

I don't think anybody in this thread said that, just that there's a limit to what USB mics can provide. I probably pushed the XLR path hardest, and even I said that if he wasn't sure about going all-in, he should get the Yeti. Though I admit I was pretty biased toward the XLR path because I've been a voice actor and music producer long before being a vtuber, and I probably projected my own subjective experience onto him too much. That said, I've used both the Yeti and AT2020 extensively, and they're not the same. The Yeti is good for someone who intends to do non-music and non-VA work, podcasts, streaming, let's plays, etc, or is on a strict budget, and does not expect to upgrade. It's all that most people will ever need, and is by far the more convenient option.

That said, we can't omit the drawbacks, and people who have them need to know how to deal with them. Specifically, worse frequency response, worse build quality (less sturdy in general, and anecdotally, the knobs on mine crackle and have dead zones now), and much worse background noise rejection. That last one can easily become an issue in your untreated bedroom, a few feet away from your noisy-ass computer fans, on the vibration-sucking desk stand that it comes with. Which reminds me. For anyone reading this who already has or is going to have a Yeti, the gain knob on the back is ABSOLUTE SHIT and is NOT your friend, and WILL cause everything to sound awful if you use it. iirc the suggested usb presently is the Blue Snowball, which is a sort of sidegrade depending on what you're expecting from it for an entry grade usb. I got a Blue Yeti second hand (this was a terrible mistake) and it has a horrible whine that I have to filter with voicemeeter. The gain knob is hot garbage and feels like there's a secret binary switch built into it about 3/5 across the knob that transforms the sound from "ok" to "please kill me" I'll probably end up getting a nicer XLR at some point but I've got other investments (and a skeb addiction) to massage first.
