Not new. Everyone from Nene Amano to Fillian to Snuffy to Shylily to Punkalopi and even Nijis like Nina and Selen have gotten on board the shorts meta from time to time. All it generally gets you is some vanity subs that don't actually watch your streams or interact with you in any other way than watching your shorts (which only pay out pennies). Eventually most people get bored of making them or fall out of the algorithm so they aren't effective anymore, and stop.

Yes and no. For growth in subscribers yes. For revenue, not really. Shorts are monetizable but seeing a few creators discuss the subject show the payout is not as good as a 10-20 min. video or livestream. She needs to hold onto their attention for more than a few seconds.

Filians' the prime example of someone whose growth is massively influenced by Shorts, but her actual YT content views get very little by comparison. 1.71m subs and having multiple videos several months old that can't hit 150k views is terrible.

Shorts don't work for vtubers who don't have a dedicated editor putting out regular medium length, roughly 10 minutes, clips and compilations. You'll gain a large boost in sub count but it will not give a term noticeable boost to ccv or engagement. In fact, in many ways it hurts your channel because long term your engagement percentages are down. Things like subs to likes ratios fall off a cliff. As a content creator you end up falling into the dead sub trap.
I hope she can convert this growth though I doubt it. Idol doesn't seem to be able to create trends, only copy them from others.

This is really impressive for growth but for a streamer the result is always the same: dead subs.

Shiki Miyoshino and Miori Celesta inclined real hard after some of their clips and shorts went viral but their ccv aren't good at all. There was that one JP group that had the girl who had a piece of paper over her face, all of them went crazy with the ads and had 60-100k subs but were low 3-views and 2-views when I checked in.

This will look good for investors and sponsors for the guy in charge to say that he can give people in his startup the support to reach 100k+ subs but they aren't there for her main content so it doesn't really matter.

Are newfags forgetting that Hololive, specifically Fubuki, basically did the exact same thing before Youtube shorts were even a thing? Its the reason why she became the biggest channel in Holo next to Korone who also got international recognition, but they were eventually dethroned by Gura.

In this case, Rin's large sub count isn't really transferring into viewship because her live viewers and VOD views are not growing at the same pace since obviously the people who watch shorts aren't going to watch streams

yes, the overlap between people consume short form content as opposed to people who like longer forms is low atm but youtube has stated that one their goals of 2023 is focusing on how to transition people who normally just watch your shorts to also watch your videos/livestreams and vice versa, so doing this now and getting in good with the shorts algorithm may payoff big time in the future

I don't know any actual Vtubers but I know a few people who are moderately successful Youtubers. We're talking like, a few hundred thousand subs. They make money but aren't rich, that kind of thing. All of them have been saying that shorts are THE algorithm right now. Like people with flatlined growth can get thousands of new followers a week if you're putting up shorts consistently. Youtube DESPERATELY wants shorts to become a big deal to compete with Tiktok, so they're pushing it HARD in visibility.
