I think the mistake both Youtube and Twitch did was not charging money for features. The thing with these platforms is that you can't make the viewers pay for anything. They will fuck right off because the websites fundamentally do not provide them with anything irreplaceable, that's why webdevs deliberately design the site UIs to be addicting so people continue browsing for longer. But the content itself? Most of it is noise that will never be viewed by anyone, and that's the issue. That's why it makes sense to charge people for upload/stream features. Not paywall them entirely, but restrict the quantity and quality to weed out certain practices. Most people don't need things like 4K or HDR or 60FPS or high bitrate or the ability to upload hour long videos and so on. And the people who are serious about being "content creators" will settle for some agreeable fee to access those features.

It doesn't impact the viewers' experience and it weeds out certain poor practices and channels that burden the servers without producing any views.
