Lots of startups got venture capital money and needed a bank to hold it.
Said bank got the bulk of that money and didn’t had enough loans out to make a profit of holding the money.

They then took the bulk of the money (in 2020) and bought 10Y (TEN YEARS!) treasure bonds at 1% interest for “risk free returns”.
That wouldn’t usually be a problem as you can usually sell those at face value if you need liquidity.
But the interest rates were hiked recently and nobody wants to buy a bond paying 1% in ten years (actually seven now) in the secondary market when you can buy the same bond from Uncle Sam paying 2.5% in the same period, so that money is effectively tied for seven years.
That’s part one.

Part two is that a whole lot of the startup scene in the past few years were riding the crypto wave and, with FTX going tits up, lots of these “tech” companies started needing their money in hand and fast, leading to a lot of withdrawals.
The bank obviously didn’t have the money (it was tied in bonds) and word got out that they were not good for it, so people that didn’t even need the money now wanted their money back too
