They're usually lonely people who want some form of acknowledgement, same as with people who donate to regular streamers.
It's probably not healthy on a psychological level, but unless they're spending their entire life's savings, it's not really worth worrying about. Not everyone can be saved.

I don't need the money I donate either. I also enjoy the content my oshi provides. I donate to support her putting out more of said content, for me and other fans to enjoy, and for her to enjoy creating. Simple as.

I make a lot of money so I'll donate to them until I think they are making more money than I do and at that point I stop because they just don't need my help anymore. I think I have donated about 2.5k in the last year to various chuubas, but it was 2.5k that I didn't need and they do need.

The first time you make a big dono you get a huge rush, after that your either chasing that fleeting high or trying to convince yourself you can date her. I have never donated to a vtuber or any other streamer in my life and never will. This content is free and I will continue to be a proud parasite. I'm not hurt when Rushia and Nyaners cuck their fan bases, Mori can't stop taking the bait, Enna turns into (more) of a spiteful cunt, Gura never streams, Pippa backstabs and grifts off right wingers, or Elira tells her fans she doesn't like them. I've lost only my time and I enjoyed watching the stream anyways so I haven't lost anything. Behind the cute character is a woman who will lie for fame and money and almost definitely has a boyfriend and a bodycount while pretending to be single. I'll continue to watch without paying and if they betray their audience I'm not out any money.
