It wasn't about people preferring one voice over another.
Kizuna Ai fans were following the person who played Kizuna Ai. Her personality, mannerisms, sense of humor. You can't just swap that out for someone else and expect people to accept it.

Trying to change her voice was a move by Activ8 to assert control over the character, to turn her into a product instead of a talent. They didn't want Ai to have control over the character that she embodied. They didn't want something like her current hiatus, they wanted to be able to constantly sell Kizuna Ai forever.
