Vei's current model by Artgun is right up there with Shylily and pink rock Mouse as some of the best rigged models in the west right now. Kson's model may not be as impressive in 2023 as it was the day it debuted, but it's still exceptionally well done and I always forget the name of the guy who did it. Himenosensei or something? That's all on the 2D side. I don't even know if Artgun is still doing Snuffy's 3D models but she initially got popular because of her ability with facial tracking on 3D models, not her 2D stuff.

Also curious if anyone knows who rigged obkatiekat's model. It's an underdog but she's one of the few 2D models I've seen able to do almost completely 90 degree head turns to the left and right.

I don't like their designs in general because they feel too focus grouped to me. Like I'm sure someone will argue that "oh so you don't want a design that's as appealing to as many people as possible?" and my answer is kinda no lmao. The stupid shit, flaws, or obvious instances of personal taste triumphing over sensibility are what I like about indies and VShojo. People used to bait about it a bit but I really like Haruka next to Fauna. They both share a lot of the same design principles, nature-themed green woman with antlers but Fauna just feels like she's a gacha version of Haruka. She's more elegant, her horns are tiny twigs that don't get in the way of anything but still convey nature, and she has a very fancy accessory. Meanwhile Haruka has massive antlers that would constantly get in the way of her screen, made her fugi twice as tall as anyone else's, and just one of the most plain outfits you'll ever see on a vtuber. But that gives her more SOVL to me than the focused and more professional design Fauna has. At least to me.

They're not just focus tested, because they do "generations" the entire fucking design group has to have a "theme". The first EN was basically four monsters and a time traveling detective that was sent to stop them. People forget that Ame was supposed to be some kind of "heroine" in this weirdass theme arc of theirs and it was quickly forgotten about when Gura took off and everybody else did okay or stagnated. Then they did it again with Council and TEMPUS. Nijisanji does pretty much no theme but their designs are still awful.

It's actually most noticeable in HoloCure, where the EN members' abilities are almost all derived from their model's theme/design, rather than something specific to the talent. Like if you play IRyS and don't really know much about her, you won't learn anything because the entire character is "hope" and "Nephilim."
