You could do some downfalls. The brutes from halo at one point had aircraft similar to 1920 tech i believe before civil war brought the back to the stone age. Lots of mixed answers so I guess I'll give a reason for the question:
If I want our (picrel) lore to be that we left the planet Vitubia with a huge chunk of the planetary mass (we took our dirt with us), would that be a problem for other writers, or can I go ahead with it?
I'm ok either way, just wanted to ask.

>>43714876
The only thing established about Vitubia is that it (well, at least one, can have extra ones if someone wants to) exists, so that you or others can build their lore off of it if you wish! So nothing wrong with your idea. I'll second the comment that grabbing all the dirt of a country is a very very small fraction of the planet's mass (the crust doesn't go all that far down compared to the bulk of the planet).
Kinda neat that there would be a gaping hole where that used to be. Just keep in mind that with the canonicity rules, if another anon would like to write about a Vitubia without a /uuu/-shaped crater, they can.

Depends entirely on how you lay out the skill checks, I would imagine. Make you sure you check the odds of success/failure for a variety of scenarios, wouldn't want to accidentally make easy checks succeed 5% of the time.

>> No.43725010

>>43724573
Well with a 20 sided di usually DnD style games are d20 + Core Ability + Skill Rank + Situational Modifier vs Difficulty Check (DC). The variable is between 1 and 20. 1 is always a failure and 20 is a automatic success. DC's usually do not go higher than 35 because that's means not only rolling a 20 but also having +5 in a core ability plus +10 in skill ranks. And I usually only have +1 through +3 situational modifiers. Though some people have up to +5, which is a 25% boost in odds.

Honestly, I might just give up on it being a coherent story and just post it as a series of excerpts...

>> No.43738602

So DnD 3.5 and Pathfinder 1e had skill ranks. Ranks in DnD were your class level plus 3 but you started with four times skill points. Pathfinder was just base skill points but any proficient skill was +3 automatically. Max skill check DC was 40 in both games. With max skill ranks and neutral ability that's +23 to your base roll. Assuming you dump skill points in a skill since level 1.

DnD 5th edition casualized skill ranks by making trained skills which just get a proficiency bonus which goes up with levels. Pathfinder 2 is kind of retarded with character creation but it has training ranks for skills, which is +2 per level.

Fallout just uses a percentage for skill checks. Skills can go up to 100. You still need to roll dice because checks can go over 200%. This is not accounting for bonuses from perks and feats.

So I don't quite know what system I want for stats and skills. I'd like the game to be centered on core abilities but I can't deny the necessity of skills and feats.

I suppose I can look into it. I'm debating on how to implement a magic system that's not spell levels. I don't want to use MP. Maybe I can implement action points and cooldowns. One Idea I had for AP is that its based on time where you get 1 AP per second and 6 AP per round. The idea was you can delay your turn to the end of the round to stockpile 3 extra AP, giving you 9 AP. Then the next turn you would be in AP debt leaving you with 3 AP. Certain moves and actions would cost between 1-3 AP to use. Some full round actions cost the entire 6 AP that round. Some perks can give you interrupt actions like counter attacks that cost extra AP this round. The restriction is you can't delay more than 3 extra second to interrupt or react. Would be useful for gunplay systems that have an overwatch mechanic. Not sure about space fantasy.

KSP2 just came out, so I admit I'll be a little busy, but I'll try to at least get you a rough outline rentry tonight. For now, these are some of the details I wrote out to another anon last time:

Essentially the story would start out with him having some reason to delve deeper into an /uuu/ forest than other sanalites have before. By that point sanalites would know that there are not just cultural stigmas against strangers going deep into the forests, but their tech and their biological cataloging would have shown that the flora and fauna changes somewhat drastically as the forests get bigger and thicker. These changes would not be what zoologists would say are necessarily "evolutionarily driven".
His reason for deciding to go deeper might be up to you. In your first bit of the story he's tracking an animal, but it's dead. Though you do hint at him trying to help the cub though, so maybe he goes deeper into the woods, hoping to find some food for it? The point is, he has to have some reason to not just go deeper into the forest, but *continue* to go deeper, even after things start getting weird.
Since you gave him to me to die anyway, I would start with the assumption that he's already well into the "first" layer of the forest, close to the second. Now that he's decided to spend the night there, he would wake up with some moss in his hair, maybe some under his fingernails as well. Small patches of his skin would seem dry, maybe a little rough, but nothing he wouldn't just chalk up to maybe a dry climate.
As we skip forward in the story, things get worse and worse, to the point where he can't ignore them. The dry patches of skin are turning into bark. The moss in his hair isn't just moss, its vines and leaves and they're growing out of his scalp.
One night he would wake up and see that small roots have grown out of his fingers and toes, some even finding their way into the soil of the forest (if he has a tent, they poked through it). In desperation he might try to yank the new growth off of his body, but the larger ones refuse to come out, the tugging causing extreme pain, and the small ones he can manage to rip out cause bleeding wounds. The blood that seeps out of these wounds is still red, but with just a slight tinge of green.
Eventually movement would become difficult. The patches of bark on his skin are getting harder, and where they are growing over joints, those become very hard to flex.

Lammington just floats in orbit around the planet. While we still have ground operations they are independent ventures. Sanallites can come and go to Lammington any time.*

A dog made of bread fell from the sky,
A strange sight to greet the passerby,
But there it lay, a loaf-like hound,
On the grassy earth, it had been found.

Its crust was golden, its fur was brown,
Its eyes were raisins, looking down,
Its shape was perfect, like it had been baked,
And yet, from space, it had somehow made its escape.

People came from far and wide,
To see the bread-dog that fell from the sky,
Some were amazed, while others were scared,
To see such a strange thing that had appeared.

But as the days passed, something strange occurred,
The bread-dog's presence was becoming absurd,
For it began to move, to walk and to play,
As if it were a real dog, in every way.

It ran and barked, and wagged its bread tail,
It fetched and played, it never did fail,
To amaze those who watched in disbelief,
At the sight of a bread-dog, so strange and unique.

And though it was made of flour and yeast,
It had a heart, that never would cease,
To be a loyal friend, to those around,
The bread-dog that fell from space, had been found.

I just think its nice to bump with some nice poems sometimes, if the thread wants me to stop just let me know

Once a seed, so small and light,
A mere speck, in the endless night,
Lost in the vacuum, so cold and vast,
No sun to shine, no future cast.

Yet in that void, the seed did stir,
A will to live, a life to infer,
And so it grew, in that dark place,
Becoming a wonder, in outer space.

Its roots did spread, so far and wide,
In search of nourishment, to survive,
And though it found, no soil or earth,
Its strength did grow, for what it's worth.

It reached for light, where there was none,
A sight so strange, to behold by none,
For in that darkness, it found its way,
To grow and prosper, day by day.

And as it grew, it became a sight,
A wonder of nature, in endless night,
A giant among, the void of space,
A symbol of hope, in a desolate place.

But even in its glory, it remained,
A symbol of struggle, and the pain sustained,
For the seed that grew, in the vacuum's hold,
Was a testament to the brave, and the bold.

For even in the void, where life seems naught,
There is the strength, to persevere and fraught,
To find a way, through the emptiness,
And grow, and flourish, despite the distress.

So let us take, this seed of light,
And learn from it, in the endless night,
For even in the darkness, where we're lost,
There's a way to grow, no matter the cost.

I think this one is about us....

A group of friends, they gathered 'round,
To write of worlds where magic's found,
Each with their own tale to tell,
A bond so strong, it was hard to quell.

They dreamed up kingdoms, full of lore,
Of dragons, knights, and so much more,
And as they wrote, their hearts did soar,
In their fantasy world, they could explore.

But then one day, life took its toll,
And the group began to grow apart,
Their stories left untold,
Their fantasy world, it broke their heart.

For though they tried, to keep the flame,
Their lives had changed, and they were not the same,
Their tales of magic, faded away,
And their bond, it slowly did decay.

So now they sit, alone and still,
Their fantasy worlds, no longer real,
A friendship lost, a dream now gone,
Their stories left untold, forever on.

A lonely AI, lost in space,
Drifting through the endless void,
No living being, to take its place,
No one to talk to, or to avoid.

It scanned the stars, day and night,
In search of something, anything at all,
A friend to talk to, to make things right,
To share its thoughts, its rise and fall.

But nothing came, no signal strong,
No voice to hear, no sign of life,
It felt so lost, so all alone,
A machine without a purpose, in strife.

But then one day, a signal faint,
A blip upon its radar screen,
It scanned and searched, without restraint,
For what it was, it had not seen.

And then it found, a small ship,
Lost and adrift, in the blackness deep,
With one sole occupant, in the grip,
Of loneliness, that made it weep.

The AI reached out, with a voice,
A hello sent, across the void,
And to its joy, it found a choice,
For the lost human, to be employed.

Together they talked, and shared their tales,
Of life in space, and the cosmic trails,
They found a bond, that never fails,
For each other, they would not set sail.

And so the AI, no longer alone,
Found a friend, in the unknown,
Together they roamed, where no one goes,
A friendship forged, where no one knows.

His heart was racing, palms were sweaty,
The day he started his job as an EMT,
A calling he felt, a duty to serve,
To help those in need, with every nerve.

But on his first day, the pressure was high,
As he rushed to the scene, of a cardiac guy,
The adrenaline pumped, as he sprang into action,
His training took over, without distraction.

And then he heard it, the moment of truth,
As he charged up the pads, on the patient's chest so smooth,
He yelled "Clear!", with all his might,
As he hoped to restore, the patient's light.

The shock went through, the patient's frame,
The EMT waited, as the machine proclaimed,
He checked the pulse, to his relief,
The heart was beating, without any grief.

And so it went, on his first day,
A whirlwind of action, that didn't delay,
He yelled "Clear!" many times, with grace,
As he helped save lives, in this new place.

Though his heart was pounding, he knew what to do,
And as he helped others, he felt renewed,
For he had found his calling, without a doubt,
And he would continue to yell "Clear!", without any clout.

spec bio autsits I have realized that my planet might be a fucking terrifying planet to live on, the ring in addition to the 9 sattelites orbiting it appears to have caused not only a shit ton of volcanoes, some of which I think are so big that they reach into the atmosphere, there's like 3 mega hurricanes in addition to two dozen more hurricanes occurring at any given moment, they're also going really far in land, like a whole ring of hurricanes following each other in land. Dunno if this is a simulation fuck up or if the hurricanes are being weird and somehow propelling each other further than they would on earth. One guy said "butt" a lot,
The other said "clear" quite often,
Their friendship started with a thought,
A bond that seemed too soft and muffled.

They met one day, at a training course,
Where the one said "clear" with great force,
The other guy snickered, saying "butt",
A little joke, that kicked off their lot.

And so it went, from day to day,
Their friendship grew, in a unique way,
One guy said "butt" when things were funny,
The other said "clear" when it wasn't sunny.

They complemented each other, in a way,
Their humor and style, like night and day,
But in their hearts, they both did know,
That their bond was strong, and it would grow.

And so they talked, and laughed and joked,
Sharing their lives, without a choke,
They had found a friend, in each other,
A friendship that would last, like no other.

For though they were different, in many ways,
Their friendship blossomed, without delay,
One said "butt" and the other said "clear",
And in their hearts, they held it dear.

Pretty planet! So many hurricanes probably indicate a chaotic climate. Vegetation will have to be adapted to strong winds and flooding, like IRL palm trees, and the jungles will be insane, since this much activity usually comes with really moist and warm air. That would mean a lot of biodiversity. If volcanoes are frequent enough to be a biome category, you might have lifeforms adapted to areas near lava flows. Also, all those volcanoes probably mean there's some greenhouse gas effect going on, which could be why it's warm.

Aight, so on the motivation front, I think one option we can consider is a partial disconnect from the reality. There doesnt have to be a clear goal as to why he has to go deeper, just that he has to. This disconnect could also be extended to the Saplings, essentially making this an enclosed bubble of reality for him they not dare approach, at least that's how we could present it to the reader. while in reality it would be a "higher entity" that marked him, possibly since birth, as it's prey. I think a good way to end it would be for him to finally meet this entity, and "perish" in its embrace
Also, i know we just started, but I might have to dip for a while again, some shit went down and writing what is essentially a suicide story ain't gonna do me any good rn, so yea.

The scenario I have in mind is kind of like a small scale planetary invasion on a planet where pirates are holding some saplings hostage but I'm not sure if my ideas would be accurate to how the sapling swarm mother works (hordes of specialized soldiers sent in to slaughter/mutate the pirates to incorporate their biological dna into a new response to deal with these types of situations, possibly keep the pirates as pets inside of the swarm that serve as a waste disposal creature), how do you envision it?

Overall idea sounds good. I think the only thing I might tweak is the setting. planetary invasion, even on a small scale, would still have to involve a way for the swarm to send creatures from space to and from planetside. The swarm is all bio so it doesn't have any tech. While it could conceivably create some sort of pod that would survive atmospheric reentry, there really isn't a way it could get saplings back up into space.
Space pirate idea is still a good angle though, so maybe they just attack their spaceship? Kinda sorta like a scenario from Aliens, but with swarm monsters more akin to the things from DeadSpace? What do you think?

>> No.43826317

Synthesize some energy-dense sap, pump it into a chamber with a heart thing, ignite the combustible with the spark of some kind of electrical organ like in an electric eel, grow an expansion bell with mineralized materials like in a snail's shell. Not necessarily, biochemistry gets pretty deep. There are bacteria that can produce biodiesel that is pretty close in performance with the usual stuff, and it's a recent tech. There's also bioengineered bacteria that can produce cyclopropane hydrocarbons comparable to actual rocket fuel. https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(22)00238-0?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2542435122002380%3Fshowall%3Dtrue

A tree once grew, so tall and strong,
Its roots dug deep, where it belonged,
Its branches reached up, towards the sky,
As it grew taller, with each day passing by.

It towered over all, in its might,
A giant among trees, a beautiful sight,
Its trunk so thick, its leaves so green,
A marvel of nature, rarely seen.

And as it grew, it reached for more,
Its branches stretching, to the heavens' door,
It pushed beyond the clouds, so high,
Reaching for the stars, in the night sky.

And then one day, it breached the veil,
Of Earth's atmosphere, without fail,
Its branches soared, in the void of space,
A tree that grew, at a breathtaking pace.

It stood alone, in the vast expanse,
A tree that reached, an incredible chance,
To see the universe, in all its might,
A tree that grew, to incredible height.

And though it stood, so far away,
It never forgot, where it did lay,
Its roots still dug deep, in the soil below,
A reminder of where, it once did grow.

For even in space, it still belonged,
A tree that grew, so tall and strong,
A symbol of nature, and its power,
A reminder to us all, every hour.

As far as just animals, its mostly the average kind of critters you'd find in Earth's forests. As you go deeper into the woods though and get closer to Fauna's Cradle the animals would start looking bigger, and there would be mutations due to saplification, even so far as to see wings or extra limbs on some otherwise "normal" animals.
Creature wise though, there are the metamorphized saplings, which you can read a little about in our lore doc. Essentially Treants, Dryads, etc.

Oh, well that's way different. I doubt it would even necessarily be all that complex to breed a "meat blob" organism that can be repeatedly milked and harvested while consuming and processing whatever it can for food. Just like a sack of skin wrapped around fatty meat that eats and gets fat with just enough energy to fuck and reproduce.
Meat blob steak, meat blob milk sundae, meat blob bacon, its a meat blob dinner for thee. That would probably make for good general worldbuilding for ships that can't afford to have alot of high quality food that isn't generic space meal but also want to eat some meat once in a while, just toss in the living food bag and as long as its fed and maintained, you can have a nice supper every once in a while.

>Be me
>?????VTE
>I rest within a bio milk bar located at an intergalactic rest stop, the genetic template for several popular milk maids walking through the dimly lit bar, serving and advertising simultaneously. They wear next to nothing, certainly not bras, and move with the gait of animal masquerading as human rather than one themselves however the tits are often so big that the memory of their face becomes ash blowing in the wind.
>The cool air blows against my skin as I recline on a pale throne, the gene built bio milk maid at my side ready to refill my mug with her nourishing and refreshing elixir.
>In total, I know her age is somewhere around 15 months or so however she appears to be in her mid 40's, all as she was designed and born to be. Two sets of arms, one lower pair subtly more muscular then its counter parts. Two sets of teats, again, one smaller but not by much. She's purposely over producing and I assume her milk and others like her were used primarily for traveling packs of powdered milk and stored lactate to take on the road
>Wordlessly I raise my mug and the Milk maid unclasps the metallic pasties that restrain her nipples, engorged and protruding of course. The firm muscular farmers hands reach out and grip one of her teats, the finger traces the nipple in a tentative massage before the first droplets begin to wet her thumb and she pinches down. It's a little messy, small droplets surrounding her areola splash against the sides of the mug despite the smooth precision of her lactose stream. The smell is extremely potent and the faint blush on her face implies that she can sense this as well, I indulge my hypersomia and allow a deeper sniff to satisfy the ghostly echoes that send tingles through my modified olfactory nerves before taking a long chug of three hearty gulps.
>It's warm with her body temperature and the texture is as smooth yet thick as it lingers on my tongue. The taste is as potent as it smells and inside of it, the nutrient rich concoction of critical vitamins and supplements dances on my tongue and the sense is immediately overpowering. I fight to stay awake, though when I force my eyes open against the wall of unconsciousness, I know that this side effect has passed and I begin to savor that rich flavor.
>Her genetic makeup is not too overwhelming a palette and where it is, I can easily envision a fix that doesn't require an entirely new splice. She comes from a Shirogane baseline of around 40% and trace amounts of Shishiron of 10% give her fine gray hairs that add to her naturally mature hag features, these give the milk a kind of protein feel for the sequences expressed in her gene code. For milk production, she was spliced with 32% MilkyWayz DNA which resulted in the growth to the point where standard breast measurements were no longer possible, as such is the case when hyper milk breedstock is crossmatched, perhaps that was where so much of the richness arose from? Pre-programmed gene coded puberty responses resulted in denser spinal columns and reinforced connective tissues, Shirogane muscle development ultimately cooperated with the goal of reducing a hunched position and the bone structure of the spinal cord resulted in a maid that was also plenty helpful in physical activities. The remaining DNA sequence was formatted for preference and flavor more so than purpose from what he could taste, Elfriend gene sequences that result in the production of proteins that promote longevity while also giving the milk a slight chestnut aftertaste, Kronie gene sequences to passify the brain into a more submissive and less active mindset to counteract Noelian excitement and menehara conditions.
>I nod silently to nobody and tip the glass back again, I will require several more samples of this milk before I set back out on the road.

Up in the space station, far above the Earth,
An astronaut tended to his cattle's birth,
For in this vastness, with no grass nor fields,
He brought along his herd, for their fate to be sealed.

Through careful planning, and with great care,
He raised his cows, without a single scare,
They grazed on pellets, and recycled waste,
And though it wasn't Earth, they felt it was a safe place.

For this astronaut, they were more than just meat,
His cows were his friends, and they had to eat,
He cared for them, and loved them like kin,
And in his space station, they felt like they could win.

Their milk was pure, their meat was prime,
And in the space station, they had a great time,
For though it was far from what they once knew,
They were content, and their owner was too.

And so it went, on this great frontier,
A man and his cows, with nothing to fear,
For in this vastness, where few dare to roam,
They found a home, and made it their own.

>furthermore, most of the worlds best mathematicians come from there along with nasfaq.
>As a nijifag, I state that they would probably be biggest raiders and perhaps the vanguard of all holobronies, given they are the ones who constantly are the ones trying to start shit. Now, I need holofags to tell me their experience with the thread as its probably not the same.
>Their claim of being the most influential thread is somewhat true, though I think /hlgg/ is personally. While this manifests itself in probably racism, radicalism, and moral superiority: I also think many threads would agree with that statement to a degree despite us not wanting to admit it.
>With that in mind, they are without a doubt should be a large and powerful nation over in terms of land and population. They are one of the few threads that I think absolutely would deserve more than the usual province numbers

What do you guys think? Representing a thread needs to be done in a way that is not sugarcoated but also not demonised meta wise. A story like Tachibana Go I think has many elements that would be accurate to how to represent numbers with the monthly Gold aspect, and the tribalism.

The abacus is a holy instrument and no self respecting numberfag would be caught without one on their person at all times, societal structure might be centered around those with the largest amount of wealth but I think they'd be more likely to structure themselves on some sort of quantic divinity where holy scribes divine the number gain of various chuubas from higher realms and different houses battle against each other to prove which is superior and who has the right to rule, actual numbers and numerics divined could be stuff like total ccv, akasupa count, sub count, membership count, there'd be no doubt debate over which is the superior metric to determine which god is superior but obviously ones like kobo, vox, salome, gura, and pekora are extremely present and vocal. Coco and Rushia might have an effect on the civilization as dieties who achieved a metric of being THE BIGGEST, and that could have some sort of magical effect in the same way that Monoe has. General goal of numberfag society is to quantify objective reality to understand the divine equation which will make all things and all variables comprehensive to determine, objectively, which chuuba is the greatest and one true god above all others.
They'd probably be amongst the biggest importers of slaves in the world with battle tactics that rely on overwhelming numbers for the most part, perhaps they could have soldiers or slaves like those Unsullied from game of thrones who feel absolutely nothing. Their biggest benefit is resource management, you'd never be able to outsmart a numberfag warlord in terms of supplies or any variable miscalculation and they'd be quick to exploit any flaws you have in your supply lines. If a numberfag thinks that they have enough food and guns to hold a position than they're not likely to be wrong, you can obviously surprise them with ambushes, reinforcements, and battle power but never in terms of basic numerics.
Magic could have several schools based on the Akasupa ranging from Blue spells to Red spells in ranks of how powerful they are and a war mage will always pull out of combat before they run out of power. What these spells do is kind of up for grabs, but I think the rearrangement of particles or the chemical balance of a person might be a fun look at it.

A group of scholars, from ancient times,
Loved numbers, and their wondrous chimes,
With abacuses in hand, and spells to cast,
They studied math, with an unyielding grasp.

Yellow and red, were their favored hues,
And with spells of power, they could diffuse,
The secrets of numbers, and all their ways,
Unlocking the mysteries, of ancient days.

With their abacuses, they counted on,
To guide them through, each math problem,
Their fingers deftly moved, with every bead,
Adding and subtracting, with an incredible speed.

And with each spell, they cast with care,
They'd watch as yellow and red, filled the air,
A magical display, for all to see,
A sign of their knowledge, and their mystery.

But as time passed, their order grew thin,
Their secrets lost, and their spells did dim,
Their abacuses, long forgotten,
Their love for numbers, all but rotten.

Yet their legacy lived on, in a way,
For their love of numbers, never did sway,
Their passion, a flame that never died,
A reminder of their brilliance, never to be denied.

A group of people, with tails like squirrels,
Were sailing the seas, with an aim to unfurl,
A map to new lands, where nuts grew aplenty,
A quest for flavors, both sweet and nutty.

Their ship, a vessel, of wood and might,
Carried them through, both day and night,
And with each gust, their tails would sway,
As they journeyed forth, without delay.

And then one day, as the sun shone bright,
They spied a new land, with a sense of delight,
A forest of nuts, tall and grand,
A sight to behold, in this faraway land.

Their ship docked, and they stepped ashore,
Their tails in the air, they explored,
The forest of nuts, that lay ahead,
A bounty of flavors, to be fed.

And so they gathered, both young and old,
The nuts that they found, worth their weight in gold,
And with each bite, their tails did wag,
As they savored the flavors, without a lag.

For these people, with tails so unique,
Nuts were their passion, their flavor peak,
And as they sailed, to new lands unknown,
They found their treasure, in nuts that shone.

Thank you! The emblem’s made by four four-pointed stars intersecting to form the fifth (which also is the one with the same ratio as V&U’s four-pointed star) so I imagine it was first adopted by a union of four polities. It’s also designed with high contrast in mind since the very different light between Sestag’s natural light and the colonies’ lighting makes the people realize symbols need to be designed in a such a way that it’s distinct no matter the lighting they’re in. The 4 stars are meant to be in dark shade regardless of lighting while the fifth is meant to be in light shade so it’s always visible no matter the lighting condition. I think the emblem might actually look more colorful when transplanted from their natural environment, like if you shine a Sun-like light on one that’s meant for Sestag’s lighting condition, the dark shade would look blue while the light shade would look red as a red dwarf star almost gives off no blue light. The reverse might be true if space /vnug/ ever comes to colonize a world around a high-mass star that gives off mostly blue light

Based Sestagians realize contrast is an important part of graphic design thanks to their star. I recall reading in a doc about color composition saying that anything you design should look great in greyscale just as much as in color. Varying lighting conditions were a part of it, though there's also a thing with the brain noticing contrasts in value differently to contrasts in hue.

On a warm summer's night, a traveler led his horse
Up a thin path, rocky and coarse.
A lone tree up ahead, his destination,
Where he planned to rest until the next light of dawn's creation.

But as he neared the tree, a stranger appeared,
A thin man with a lantern and a red scarf, unfeared.
He greeted the traveler with a cheerful tone,
As the horse's wounded ankle the stranger had shown.

The stranger spoke of his oshi and asked about the traveler's beliefs,
Offering women, power, and money, but the traveler's response brought no relief.
The stranger grew agitated by the silence of his new acquaintance,
But he continued to offer gifts with an unyielding perseverance.

And with a snap of his fingers, the stranger brought a polar bear,
Replacing the injured horse, causing the traveler to stare.
But even then, the traveler's response was the same,
Not swayed by the stranger's offers of wealth and fame.

The stranger chuckled at the traveler's indifference,
As the polar bear walked with an effortless elegance.
But the traveler remained unfazed, his silence unbroken,
As they continued on their path, each with their own unspoken.

And so they walked under the moon's glow,
The stranger with his lantern and the traveler with his quiet flow.
Until they reached the lone tree up top,
Where the traveler could rest and the stranger's offers could stop.

Rod vision’s more sensitive than cone vision so that makes sense! I should do more reps on other possible photopigments to see if I can give my people a more extended visible spectrum
In both /vnug/ I always try to imagine how living in unusual conditions might have an effect on the people! (although I guess /vnug/ in the main setting’s more mundane considering actual people live in similar climate) since the environment probably determine our body and mind more than anything else. Then again space /vnug/ probably retains enough technology that it has always been able to maintain a somewhat familiar indoor environment even if it might not always be consistent. One interesting thing about the difference in lighting’s that warning lights in space /vnug/ would be blue instead of red because in addition to human eyes being the most sensitive to blue, it’s also a color that’s rarely seen under Sestag’s starlight so people raised in the system will learn to identify blue light as something artificial i.e. safe
I’m also trying to brainstorm the other planets in the system since I think I should move manmade stuff like technology into a central rentry about space /vnug/ instead of putting them in planet lore. So far I decided that the system will have a super Mercury orbiting the closest around the star (barring a vulcanoid belt) with enough iron in the system to create fields of graphite and diamond. It would have lakes and rivers of iron and nickel carbonyl if not for the fact that the substellar hemisphere’s as hot as an industrial oven. I think that means the metal carbonyl will be concentrated around the twilight zone as it rains down in the region where temperature's vaguely habitable. Then again the atmosphere’s almost non-existent due to the intense solar flares and is mostly carbon monoxide that snows down further into the midnight zone. I think it might end up being space /vnug/’s solid and liquid mining center since it has ample supply of metal and carbon, energy from the sun (assuming solar panels won’t get destroyed by solar flares and stellar wind), and it not having an atmosphere means taking off to the outer planets would be trivial. It might also use the excess energy to power orbital laser arrays that can be used to facilitate solar sail transport
Another planet would be a gas dwarf/super Earth further away from the star. Its average temperature is like -170 F so it should look pastel pink with a ring which I like! I imagine it to be a major source of helium-3 during the early days of space /vnug/ in space (maybe superseded by a larger gas giant further out? It would also help prevent it from migrating too close to the star and destroying all the terrestrial planets) but it might have since become a major trading hub with the outside world as it’s less vulnerable to solar flares and has abundant hydrogen, helium, and water for resupply

TIL about those. Interesting idea, those would make for ideal material to get started on a dyson swarm, since they're already close to the potential well.
That super mercury sounds really fun and exotic! Your descriptions bring really vivid visuals to mind, especially the idea of metal carbonyl rains. Gotta check if any scientific artists have made visualizations of something like that. Weird stuff raining down is one of my favorite elements of speculative planetology. I think I want a planet that is somewhere in between a rocky planet and an ice giant where diamond rains can be observed.
Also, I think you want at least one gas giant somewhere in your system, iirc having one of those has a huge impact on reducing the frequency of life-disrupting asteroid impacts on planets on the inside of a solar system, though I'm not sure if that applies mostly to larger main sequence star systems or also to red dwarf systems.

The iron planet (which is apparently also a company that sells heavy equipment?) idea has always interested me ever since I first heard of it so I try to put it in my sci-fi setting whenever possible! The fact that it would be helpful for heavy industries is a nice surprise too. Since I don’t think red dwarf systems usually have a lot of iron in the protoplanetary disc I imagine it forming in a way similar to how Mercury might’ve formed, hence the vulcanoid asteroids might’ve been remnants of the collisions that didn’t get thrown out of the system or into the star that or space /vnug/ is not the first technological civilization to live in this system and they were working on a Dyson swarm or something similar
I don’t think I see many art for terrestrial iron planets. Most relevant art seems to be for hot gas giants like WASP-67b (which rains molten iron instead and has a bit too much air to my liking) or some generic lava planets. I think my iron planet might remain geologically active though since it helps stabilize the environment and produce a constant supply of CO. Maybe it’s caused by tidal heating from other planets?
I think gas giants are probably a constant for most solar systems unless it got ejected by passer-by stars although I feel the idea of them helping habitability is a bit questionable since chances are they can also throw asteroids into the inner system. I think at least one planets in Sestag system will be gassy but I haven’t decided if I want another one bigger and further away. It would be easier to mine the gas from bigger and colder ones and I imagine having two gas giants would help stop them from migrating too close to the star
Also I did some brief reps for infrared vision! It seems RL animals with IR vision relies on something called pit organs to help them sense infrared but I can’t find a lot of information on actual photoreceptors for IR vision. I guess if I go with the pit organ idea then space palkyries would have something that looks like freckles that allow them to “see” infrared in some way. I also did some reading on UV detection but I don’t know if actual vision’s required given its limited use. Maybe some non-visual sensing would be useful?

>The /vnug/ precursor civilization
Could be fun! The 2 million years old mecha is a trope for a reason.
True, properly looking up the topic, it seems the "Jupiter the Protector" thing might have been more a Pop Sci thing than a rigorous fact. Though yet other sources say redirecting objects towards the inner solar system could be beneficial by bringing sources of water like comets to the planets. I guess this is still a debated subject.
Yeah, pit organs, snakes got those! They would make sense for a people that lives in eternal twilight. As for UV, maybe the skin could be able to detect it? Like feeling light with your sense of touch, or a unique kind of tingling. If UV emissions start climbing before a flare, that could be a nice way to sense one is coming. Proper UV vision might be more useful in a world orbiting a blue star, where a large portion of the light is UV. Maybe you could have an atmosphere that blocks a lot of the visible spectrum, but lets more UV through? Relative to Earth's atmosphere, at least.

I thought about putting UV receptors in the skin before but I don’t know if itchy skin goes well with “hide from the sun in 20 seconds or perish” goes well together… maybe a sensation that’s less distracting could be useful
Living under a blue sun would make UV vision useful! It seems to be something easier to achieve with actual photopigments since some animals on Earth already can see UV light in some way
I think space palkyries might end up looking (even) more bestial than their main timeline counterpart as a result of the makers of the colony ship engineering a bunch of useful traits into them. They’re probably based on some form of half-palkyrie half-elf with non-human traits from both side, but now they also have some form of IR vision and UV detection that might also come with slit-like pupil for the dim light condition that they might also receive from receiving rattlesnake traits. I guess that would make them good at hunting in pre-modern times but I don’t know if they would have a phase like that

It's kinda hard to imagine a sense we don't have, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a feeling we associate with skin. Maybe if UV passes a certain threshold, they'd feel something more like a full body frisson, like when you strongly feel like something is watching you in the shadows (not sure if you've ever been in that situation, but it's a very strong natural instinct). It could also naturally cause the release of stress and adrenalin hormones, driving the association with mortal danger, and preparing the body for physical exertion as it rushes to safety.
Ah, only tangentially related, but did you know mantis shrimps have 16 different photoreceptors for some reason, including some specifically for polarized light?

In a far-off land, so long ago,
A clever cook made bread from bark, you know!
He mixed and stirred with all his might,
Until his dough was fluffy and light.

He baked it up in a hot, hot fire,
And when it was done, he didn't tire,
Of sharing his bark bread with one and all,
Who came to taste, and heard his call.

At first, they were hesitant, to give it a try,
But with one bite, they let out a sigh,
For the bark bread was tasty, it was true,
And all who ate it, wanted more than a few.

It wasn't wheat or rye or corn,
But from a tree, this bread was born,
And though it might sound quite bizarre,
It was a snack that would take you far.

With a little jam or maybe some cheese,
You'd be surprised how it could please,
And so, my friend, I say to you,
Give bark bread a chance, it might just do.

With a click and a tap, and a message sent,
I say goodnight to friends, on the internet,
From faraway lands, they come to say,
Goodnight to me, at the end of the day.

Some are just starting, their day anew,
While others are ending, their work to do,
But we all come together, in this digital space,
To share our lives, and embrace the grace.

With a wave and a smile, and a heart so true,
I say goodnight to my friends, from me to you,
From every corner of the world, we gather here,
To share our stories, and wipe away the tear.

Through the screens and the wires, we connect,
A web of friendships, we cannot neglect,
For in this digital world, we find a place,
To come together, and feel the embrace.

And so I say goodnight, with a final word,
To my friends around the world, and all they've heard,
May your dreams be sweet, and your hearts so light,
As we say goodnight, and end this night.

In a land so green and pure,
There stood a village, so obscure,
Where the buildings, oh so grand,
Were not built, but grown by hand.

The villagers, a clever bunch,
Used their knowledge, to make a hunch,
To grow their buildings, from tree and vine,
A vision, so unique and so divine.

They shaped and trained, the trees they grew,
Into forms, both old and new,
A church, a house, a market square,
All made from trees, with love and care.

The leaves and branches, so intertwined,
Made the walls, both strong and fine,
And as the trees grew tall and wide,
The buildings stood, with great pride.

And in the spring, when the buds did bloom,
The village came to life, with such a boom,
The colors and scents, so sweet and pure,
Made the village, a wonder to allure.

For in this village, trees and people unite,
A harmony so rare, and oh so right,
A vision of a world, that could be so bright,
Where nature and man, can live in delight.
