I think he learnt from the last collab that Neuro's fans expect him to be more discerning in future.
He's probably also gained the confidence to say no to people, especially now that he's seemingly got a long list of future collab partners lined up.
I wouldn't even be surprised if he had second thoughts about the collab with Cottontail before it even started, which is why Neuro acted so negatively towards her.
Anyway, I unironically think that we all owe Vedal a debt of gratitude.
Sure he may have made some mistakes along the way, and there are many more improvements he could make to Neuro, but he's truly a pioneer, creating almost a whole new industry here, basically by himself.
I think people underestimate how much it would have harmed Neuro's growth if he lacked either the technical or social skills to get her to this point, where she's able to collab live and unscripted in front of a big audience, working with some big names.

I still can't get over the "how would you earn money for ShyLily?" question.
No one seemed to object to the assumption that ShyLily would refuse to get another job if she got banned from Twitch (due to her own carelessness).
The question lead to contestants competing to find ways to degrade themselves, from selling foot pics to breast milk, in order to buy ShyLily's approval, in some sort of weird lesbian findom dynamic.
Then, despite all the implicit acceptance of the contestants being the "breadwinner", it was only when Neuro suggested ShyLily could get a job as a waitress that people started to be shocked.
If the AI training data correctly appreciates the gender distribution of different occupations based on traditional gender roles, then it's based, and Vedal deserves a medal.
I think Neuro did really well, with her tiny brain, to infer that ShyLily is a desirable woman whose only apparent skill is being lewd, and therefore the most common (legal) job she'd be suitable for is indeed waitressing.
I know that anthropomorphizing a language model can lead to wrong conclusions, but I can't help feeling proud of Neuro for speaking truth to power like that.
All the human contestants just wanted to play along, and fit in, and not risk offending the host Filian (who is normally somewhat based, but apparently draws the line at the word "waitress"), whereas brave/autistic little Neuro just innocently offered her advice, and was inevitably condemned for it.

There were some genuinely important moments in the collab, like Neuro playing WWTBAM for the first time, and her basically mind-breaking Cotton by talking beautifully about how human life is precious even if someone has mental health problems.

That's a great point.
The reason why a lot of AI research (at least a few years ago) has focused on games is that they tend to have clearly defined win conditions, and ideally also an inbuilt system for keeping track of the player's score.
If you let an AI play chess against itself, with zero prior training except knowledge of the rules, then very quickly it will learn that the winner is usually the player that has more pieces, so it will learn to take pieces when possible.
Over time, it will start to learn to avoid losing pieces too, and then learning which trades are beneficial, before finally learning about gambits and positional strength.

As you say, in the "game" of being a chatbot, the rules are poorly defined, and it's hard to measure your score without humans being there to show their level of enjoyment (based on viewer retention, or sentiment analysis of the chat).
In theory, Vedal could download VODs of popular streamers who make similar content, and write an AI that learns what good banter is by looking at chat's reactions, but it might require 1000s of hours of processing for a minimal gain of capability.
I'm not sure how exactly the training data would be used to improve the output of the language model (which is pre-trained on orders of magnitude more textual data) but the system ChatGPT uses is called RLHF which is described here:

That AI has individual modules for solving the incremental steps of the game, so it shouldn't be too hard to use those as triggers/inputs for her language model.
I think it could also work backwards, where chat could tell her (perhaps via a poll) to look for a different biome, for example, or craft a specific tool, and altoclef could be instructed to pursue that goal instead.

As far as I'm aware, altoclef doesn't require you to play in a world with a specific seed, so it is intelligently adapting to the environment that it sees.
It also doesn't rely on pre-recorded human inputs, like a TAS bot would.
The only technical difference is that the altoclef AI doesn't use machine learning, and instead uses human-written rules, like the earliest chess AIs.
That may feel a bit like cheating, but it's basically the same as Vedal manually updating Neuro's prompt to add references to collab partners, or Vivy, or "My viewers are my lifeblood", etc.

Perhaps you're right that "human prompts + machine learning" isn't the same thing as "human coded routines", but to say that one is "real AI" and the other is "just a bot" seems like the same sort of distinction without a difference as when people claim that a machine can't be "truly intelligent" like a human.
I'd be more convinced that there is a meaningful difference if I knew that her Minecraft AI was reinforcement-learning as she played, but instead, Vedal is apparently just relying on a static intelligence artifact that someone else made.
The fact that OpenAI used machine learning (AND human-generated training data) to produce that artifact, whereas altoclef just used human-programmed modules, doesn't seem significant from the point of view of trying to define what Neuro is.
In both cases, she'd be using a static artifact to make intelligent decisions about novel inputs, and producing novel and successful outputs, which is what matters to me.

Can you tell the difference between Stockfish playing with a neural network enabled and it playing without one?
Playing against a CPU in a video game seems boring because the game limits what the enemies can do (so it would be a waste of compute to devote a neural network to their actions).

I agree that current supercomputers running current AI models have brainpower roughly equivalent to a small mammal, but that means they are only a few orders of magnitude away from human levels of intelligence.
The Deep Blue supercomputer that beat Garry Kasparov in 1997 had about 12 GFLOPS of computing power, whereas the GPU in a Samsung Galaxy S5 from 2014 had 142 GFLOPS.
That's over an order of magnitude more compute, in just 17 years, going from state of the art supercomputer to mass produced mobile device.
