what you are failing to adjust for is how mass media filters for manipulators, liars, people willing to signal w/e is desirable in the moment. "Genuine" people get fitlered out because they aren't flexible enough to do the correct PR move, to not say what they think if the fans or the platform doesn't want them to say it. Success online selects for more or less convincing liars preying on naive people who will cooperate with the liar because they do indeed want to believe the lies. Like you are doing now.
