U likely don't need /vr/ but rather rom hacking irc or otherwise. But to be brief, the tooling of today is infinitely better than 30 years ago. Running the assembler for rm4 likely took 5 mins+ so the speed of adding features and testing things is a lot more rapid and reliable. It also didn't require sending it to an eeprom as well, and we have save states so we can more easily test volatile code.
As for improving the gameplay, it's mature code that's available in a relocatable disassembly and its flaws and bugs are well understood and worked on before.
Furthermore, puresabe is just cool as fuck. He also makes the new years hacks of rm/rmx every year. God knows what he's cooked up in all of his years of experience!

dunno if anyone would want this but here's an uncurated upload of 1811 pics that i left the GPU to generate over a few hours. (still uploading)

as you can see, it manages to get the red bangs right most of the time.
the model i used for this (abyss orange mix) seems to really like squishy flesh in tight clothing, so you get a lot of those.
there might be some rare body horror monstrosities that i would've deleted, but like i said, uncurated.
because of the wide aspect ratio, sometimes it generates 2 girls instead of just 1, fun!
