Average monthly salary in her country is $800

>> No.42584144

As someone who has paid thousands of US dollars for art commissions - and who has now spent more than a thousand dollars on writing commissions - you simply have to accept that the price is set by the artist and is usually non-negotiable, and you have to respect it.
The fact is, a lot of professional artists do not rely on commissions for a living and in fact do it on the side. When they set such a huge price tag, they're not setting it with the commissioner in mind - they're setting it thinking, "this is the baseline for what I'm willing to spend my free time on." They're throwing out a hook into the water for some extra side cash and if there are no bites, it doesn't matter to them because they're unwilling to spend their precious free time on extra work for any less.
So when you criticize their price points, be aware that you're probably just not the target audience for what they're selling.
Now, on the other hand, if someone sets a massive price point and then actively COMPLAINS about not receiving any commissions... then feel free to fire away with the criticism cannon, because they're most likely tall poppies in need of a good trimming.

The best artist I ever had sells his work at around 30-60$ depending on the detail and he makes a fucking killing off me because I'm a repeat costumer. Better to earn 50$ 3 times in a month, than 100$ once.

Drawfag who wanted to make a career out of it here.
the truth of the matter is that trying to make a living out of it is simply impossible now, the market is oversaturated and as several Anons here pointed out most people who want to commission something are broke too.
Over time I've seen that unfortunately to succeed being an artfag is by making your name more famous than your own art and this is only achieved by chasing fads, networking or in desperate measures leeching off someone more famous, I think that's why there is so much drama in the online art scene, at least on Twitter.
Even finding a niche to establish yourself in isn't that easy as most of even the smaller ones are already covered.
Andy Warhol was right, the key to success as an artist is knowing how to sell your name and not so much how good your skills are.

To find an artist with an art style that I like and within my price range? I've never had a great deal of trouble on the art side. I'd say I've had a lot more difficulty on the writing side of commissions than art-wise.

A lot of people make clear what they will and won't create on their commission sheets, so as long as you're polite, you'll find yourself in good company. Many creators are perverts too, you see, two of whom I commissioned even shared similar interests to mine. I spent a lot of money on those two.

Most of my commission hunts have been on deviantart through commission groups and the like.

Yes. $100 is fairly standard, too. However, you can find many artists eking out a living in poorer countries who charge significantly less for their talents.
