Every single time I watch japanese chuubas playing a "Type A/B" game they get stuck on this part. Why do they insist on exporting american mental illness to the rest of the world? Don't they already "censor" genders when localizing Nintendo games to americans? Why not do the opposite as well for japanese versions?

I haven't watched someone play this but I heard that the witch/wizard thing only changes what people call you (independent from everything else). So it's not the same as type A/B. If it's lost in translation, who cares? Pick whatever. You think people are confusing it for character classes? I guess they can add a disclaimer that it doesn't affect gameplay for babies like you who are too terrified to make decisions.
If you're mad being able to choose this, what about the people who make troll looking things in any multiplayer game with a character creator? Do you cry that they're breaking your immersion and demand that the sliders be limited for your enjoyment? Or do you suck it up and acknowledge that people have the freedom to make decisions?

Holy fucking retard, take meds. The witch wizard thing changes which dorm you're in. If you mistakengly make a female character and pick wizard, you'll be in the boys dorm. Which is obviously not what a japanese woman who didn't even understand the question wants. Make it clear. Do not make it confusing. I don't care that you can make a tranny in the game, I don't care that you can make a male character and sleep with the women, it does not bother me in any way, but it shouldn't happen by mistake, and it does happen by mistake because not every person buying this game across the globe is up to date with american internet drama.
Witch/Wizard works for the autistic obsession with avoiding the words "female/male" that the west is going through right now, but 魔女/魔法使い is not as obvious, as you can see by the streamers and chat's reactions. Only people who either played themselves or are more in tune with this kind of thing can come in and elucidate the meaning. It shouldn't be unclear.
They could keep the male/female initial option but let you turn your character into whatever through the customization options, like how there are no gender exclusive hair types in Bloodborne or whatever, but they're going out of their way to deny reality, resulting in confusing information.

The thing is that they're doing it precisely to pretend gender doesn't exist, or at least that it doesn't define anything about you. It's intentionally nebulous.
When presented with a choice between 魔女 and 魔法使い, after creating their obviously female character and choosing the female voice, the Japanese streamer isn't assuming "well, one is witch, so the other is probably male, despite it not making sense in japanese", they're thinking "what is the difference between witch and magic user? Is it a different class? Is magic user better?", because, in their minds, they've already chosen their gender at least twice at this point. But western games like to pretend a woman who looks like a woman and has the voice of a woman could very well be a manly man.

>> No.42630175

>>42629808 (me)
Couple more things for context, if you're creating a male character, then it gets less confusing, because a male character would not call themselves a witch, which, in Japanese, means "magic woman", the 女(onna) in 魔女(majo) straight up means woman. So they're not even avoiding mentioning "female" by doing this. It does not translate.
They can try to bend the rules and say "who says you have to be a woman to be a witch?" in English, but in japanese you're quite literally saying you're a woman.

I still maintain that the game makes it needlessly complicated just to be a tiny bit more "woke".
Instead of making it a text only binary choice right at the very end of the character creation process, ask the player at the start
>Are you a: Witch / Wizard
And have the base silhouette of the character change as you move the cursor to reflect a female or male character. Then, in the actual customization options, nothing is gender locked, and you can make your big titty wizard if you want. But that's the thing, whenever you want to specify gender, you can just do that. The entire issue the discussion is about is precisely that modern western devs are actively refusing to specify.
However, what they fail to realize is that not every language and culture can accommodate their bullshit as well as their own. So what you end up with is that, in the Japanese version of Hogwarts Legacy, in order to avoid saying "woman", they say "magic woman". Don't you realize how fucking retarded that is?

It has pronouns, but they're used less than in English due to the way everything is contextual in Japanese. Like 彼(かれ)and 彼女(かのじょ)mean he and her. But the main use of pronouns in English is to shorten a sentence and use context, in Japanese they just drop the noun altogether and it's entirely contextual.
I.e.
>How is John doing?
>He's fine. I spoke to him earlier today.
>Oh, what did he say?
>He said he's feeling great!
Notice how in English the pronoun "he" showed up 5 times? In Japanese, John would be mentioned by name at the beginning of the conversation and then they would just drop any mention of him from then on because it's just assumed that's who they're talking about. Something like
>How is John doing?
>fine. spoke with earlier today.
>Oh, what said?
>said feeling great!
This is also why some scanlations get the gender wrong of ambiguous or yet to be shown characters sometimes. They might mention maou-sama once then never actually refer to him/her again for the rest of the conversation, so it's ambiguous until the character is actually introduced.

they translated it into their language using the words and conventions of their language, that's not a failure in translation anymore than a manga saying a like like "she's jashin-chan her hair is blonde", that's just a difference in languages where one language isn't nearly as gendered like the other is.
the failure in translation is trying to insert english gender debate shit that only makes sense to americans into the mold of a mostly genderless language isolated from western nonsense.

>> No.42650143

>>42649791
The gendering of the words is irrelevant here though, it's removing nuance by getting rid of specific magical terms used in the world itself.

Whats the big deal what someone picks? Does it change the story?

the japanese version of harry potter is written in japanese using japanese.
i'm sorry that the language isn't english, and your idea of lazy localation is that they don't use the word kare every time they refer to harry

kinda, because you're getting sent to a different dorm or whatever, so you're going to interact with different people because different dorm, but the overarching story will be the same. the different house thing is just kind of like picking a starter in pokemon. it's fun

It doesn't even make sense that such a tiny part of the human population gets pandered to this hard for no fucking reason, that practically everything gets rewritten and changed just to accommodate their delusions wherever they go or could potential have slightest interest in.
There are also a few people who are in love with inanimate objects like rollercoasters or trains, yet the entire world isn't suddenly bending over backwards to offer that as a romance option in every single game afraid to not be inclusive enough (or a million other examples). Why are specifically they so important? I don't get it.

>> No.42651241

The original version is written in English and translations should use different words for different terms used in the original. Translating every spell as abrakadabra would be lazy as shit too

but that's not what happening, witch and wizard in the context of the potterverse are just gendered terms for person with magic ability, like he and she are for people.

>> No.42651915

But there is also the term warlock used in the books (and probably some more that I can't remember because I read them 2+ decades ago when they released). Removing that nuance makes the translation soulless.

i could write an essay about what's going on, but i can keep it kind of short by just saying being a narcissistic psychopath is a good trait to have if you want to get into positions of signaling, let's say, like translating things, writing stories, etc.. like, you can be a good story teller or whatever, a great story teller, but you also have to, like, put yourself out there, advertise yourself, network and communicate, and if you're a narcissistic psychopath, like, you get it right. and then when there's enough of them in positions of importance they can just hire each other based off of twitter pronouns

kek, checked another one, Lui wasn't even confused by it, she straight up picked "magic user" and was about to start the game but chat spammed to tell her that it meant "male".

i had to look into it, harry potter directly translates warlock when its used. so Dumbledore being Chief Warlock of Wizengamot was translated as ウィゼンガモットのチーフウォーロック(Uizengamotto no Chiifu Uoorokku)
but the term doesn't really work for "welcome to hogwarts, new student"

I've read the official translations in my native language around the same time and I remember the warlock/witch being just the same word with a different suffix (for a male and female "magic happener" if I were to translate it directly) and I don't think it was soulless. Or maybe I just didn't think about it so hard and I didn't really know what the English version looked like, hell, I was a kid, I even read the fan translation of the Deadly Hallows when it came out since I didn't know English back then as well as I do now. Also, English and Japanese are my second and third language and even I consider the 魔女/魔法使い a little confusing (and, since I consume a lot of autistic content, 魔法使い in the works I read are usually female anyway). Should've gone full chuuni with ウィッチ/ワーロック in furigana and just call it a day, maybe it would've created less confusion, or just go with 魔法使い(女) and 魔法使い(男) or even 女/男, it's a "choose your gender" anyway, it's not a character class, unless witches have some charm spells and warlocks, dunno, rape spells.

>Should've gone full chuuni with ウィッチ/ワーロック
Yeah that was what I thought from the start as well. Although considering >>42653603 it wouldn't fit for a student. Just going for ウィザード/ ウィッチ would've worked I'm sure since people know witch is female so the other one has to be male.

you mean ウィッチ/ウィザード, like in the above post, warlock is a more specific term. while wizard is the generic term i.e. "you're a wizard, harry" "hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry"
