I can see the appeal of this, if you are a competent animator or know a competent animator who can make appealing animations, it allows you to make a sort of vtuber model without needing to learn live2d or commission an expensive live2d model. Plus it definitely fits styles like this a lot better than live2d does(I remember scottfalco and some cartoon commentary channel posted what their avatars would like like in live2d and they just kinda looked uncanny). I think it will definitely pave the way for a lot more varied art styles entering vtubing, even if some people will probably argue this doesn't count as a vtuber since it's not live2d or 3D despite it being more animated and expressive than pngtubers and depending on the artist, maybe even more expressive than regular vtubers.

no, they have cartoony artstyles, but they use live2d. Toontubers is just a term coined for this method that this guy uses where he created a bunch of set animations tied to an OBS filter that you can adjust to make it so OBS triggers each animation when certain criteria are met(like having a regular talking animation and a different talking animation that it switches to when you peak the audio, or having different hotkeys change expressions). The major differences here are that you don't need a separate program to use this as its ran through OBS, and you don't need a webcam or anything like that to use this. Some PNGtubers have used OBS filters like this for basic mouth open and mouth closed stuff, but this is basically a way to make this more animated and expressive.

It's just like he says in the video. It's a nice middle ground between traditional vtubers and static image pngtubers. For extremely simplistic artstyles that don't translate well to the smoothness of Live2D it'll be a godsend but it has no tracking of any kind so any emoting that isn't pre-made won't really work.
