Why do people hate on MGR again? It's a great Metal Gear Game. It's a natural evolution of what MGS4 started. It has similar themes to MGS. Even Raiden has character development here. He went from the tool of the Patriots, to an edgy emo boy. But after MGS4, he is a clean slate. He has some basic bitch ideals, but he is being restricted by the system, and he is holding back his violent side. He learns something from every enemy who he defeats. And in the end of the game, Raiden has become someone who follows his own rules, when it comes to dealing with the evils of the world. Raiden is ignoring the law, and using his greater violence, to remove bad people who can't be touched. Also, what Armstrong preached was sort of similar to what Big Boss preached, but Big Boss was focused on soldiers fighting for what they believe, while Armstrong was focusing on just the strong.

Also, there are still people out there who use it's non canon status, and differences from MGS, to dismiss it as a brainless action game. I'm just saying that it both fits in it's franchise thematically, and has more depth to it than it's given credit for.

His motivation in the comics was so much better. The origin of the storyline is that he is in love with the personification of Death, and wants to woo her by causing a lot of death. The whole quasi-noble Malthusian spin that the movies put on it was completely nonsensical. If they had kept the original motivation it would have been a better movie.

I don't know where you're getting that because I remember it being highly praised even on release, the only actual objective criticism I remember from back then was that it was very short. And for a $50 game, yeah, it kind of was, but its price has gone down since then so it hurts less.
I've also never seen an official source say it's not canon. Yeah, Kojima didn't write it, but even he confirmed that it's still canon. There just haven't been any games that take place after it on the timeline, as well as the whole Kojima vs. Konami debacle, so I guess people use that to muddy the waters.
And don't get me wrong, I agree with you that it fits the franchise thematically. I just disagree with your assertion that the negativity was ever more than a vocal minority.
