Does speaking three languages make you mentally unstable? I'm not even joking with this one.

Euros are both more likely to speak more languages, and more likely to be schizos. So yes.

I don't get how she's so talented and quick witted, but somehow manages to be an over-emotional extrovert at the same time. Usually extroverts don't have the talents she has.

There is a theory that when you truly learn and understand a language, you also start to think in the way that the people who speak it do. It makes a little sense, to truly understand a language is to know the culture and the customs behind what is said, why, and when. So, she literally has three different cultural mindsets in her brain vying for control at any time.

I've never met a sane person who speaks two languages fluently, yet alone three.
That's not to say they don't live fulfilling or cool lives, it's just saying fluency comes at a cost when you achieve it twice.

I'm not talking about bilinguals by the way, I'm talking about being able to speak with pretty much any speaker of either language without having to ask them to slow down or use more basic vocabulary. Native level fluency. Also I think there may be smart people capable of it but I haven't met them in my life.

AFAIK the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (which is what I think you’re referring to) js largely defunct.

Confirmed this. I understand three languages and my mind is literally schizo. I process information in three different mindsets which confuses the fuck out of everyone around me. I can see flaws and merits of each culture that no one else can see.

I don't really think it's much a theory anymore. I learned Latin and my life has never been the same. I don't remember all the vocabulary but the experience of immersing myself in foreign grammar forever altered my understanding of English and my inner monologue. It also altered my understanding of reality.

>> No.4160250

Also I think there's a massive difference between learning Danish and German vs English and Japanese.

I can speak Japanese and English in C1 level, and I am not even raised in a bilingual family or with any experience of living abroad. The only reason I'm able to obtain the fluency is that I've been a lonely loser for most of my life, which gives me time and space to learn languages. And the further I go the more loneliness I get, because fewer people can truly understand me and I'm like a wanderer between each culture.

I'm not seeing the correlation between learning multiple languages and mental stability.

Can you read novels made for English Only's? Things that use extensive vocabulary and unique constructions. Somewhat like Shakespeare I suppose, given how most modern English speakers have to take a second to get what's fully going on in a lot of the sentences.

>> No.4160587

She's unstable because of the shit she's been through, not because of her ability to speak 3 languages.

I can read and enjoy English novels with some help from dictionary. I'm currently reading 1984. Well I admit without dictionary I would lost some nuances of the expression in the book.

You know, I'm a fan of massive difference-lingualism.
I think if you're going to take the debuffs of learning another language you should go big and learn foreign grammar.

I dislike the typical European who thinks it's a big deal to learn conversational ability in a language so similar to theirs. I'll even go so far as to say it's a waste of time; learn something big so you get massive schizophrenia.

You know, I don't know if it's Dunning-Kruger effect but I feel like I understand a book written in Latin with a Latin dictionary better than one in English. I say this as a native speaker of English.
