Japanese has 3 writing systems, and 2 of them are simple alphabets.

Learn these alphabets first. 92 characters in total. (Not as hard as it seems, just use duolingo or any other flashcard system).

These are symbols that represent words. Here is "mori" which means "forest": 森. You start kanji after mastering the two alphabets. There are guides for helping you remember kanji - some recommend making mnemonics or learning etymologies.
As you memorize kanji, you will slowly build your vocabulary.
Vocabulary is the most important aspect of learning a language, even more than grammar. A lot of grammar can just be absorbed naturally since thats what our brains are designed to do.

That being said, after you build your vocabulary enough, you should also study grammar and tone-accents.
Studying both these things are necessary to sounding natural.

If you ever plan on writing japanese on a piece of paper, look up the rules for "stroke order". Memorize this and you should be fine.

Follow all this, memorize at least 1000 kanji and *ta daaa~* you now basically know japanese and can watch anime without subs.
