In addition to the normies in the comment, my point was more about how big of an honor it is for her to get invited to the First Take at all. Unlike her solo lives or her CDs selling as they do, this is much less something that can be driven by the money and devotion of the Hololive fans. Merely getting invited to step onto that soundstage was probably one of the biggest defining moments for her music career so far, showing that she’s come from niche idol brand to a true musical superstar even outside of people who live in the vtuber sphere. This happens all the time to vtuber songs. Non-vtuber watchers discovering vtuber covers is how many new people got interested. Many gura fans have told me it's one of her singing videos that drew them into the hole.
And "not for her brand" is a specious thing. When someone hears a song on a radio, they don't stop to ask the music label or brand. But it's the industry work that makes it there. Without it, even great talents would languish in obscurity. The truth of the music industry is that there are more talents than attention and backing available.

You can choose to celebrate it as like Kaf playing in the Budokan. As you say, it's normalization of vtubing. But the chase after success or the mainstream is what I am indifferent to, because at the height of mainstream success you have Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.

I did the complete trip from unknown to popular once with Miko and I don't necessarily want to experience that again.
It's good for streamers but then it becomes just entertainment and we disappear.
The fans who support vtubers get the short end of the stick every time.
It's better to treat it with that expectation from the start.

Y gets 1 million subs? Good, but it doesn't change my life and I will watch someone less popular in the future instead now that the fanbase degradation occurs and I don't matter anymore.

Vtubers are already mainstream and don't need to grow more.
Maybe they can still grow at a slower pace for a decade but they may have hit an initial glass ceiling.

This is a known technological adoption model by the way with an initial hype phase, followed by a facing reality phase (mini bear market) which lasts 20 months, then followed by the realization of potential over a decade.
Vtubers just like crypto had their last hype phase at the same time and are close to the end of a bear market.

We will see how it affects vtubers and we may get a new growth phase starting from the second half of this year, but I don't trade vtubers and it's easier to gamble with crypto.

Taiwan is a difficult situation.

Forgive me if I think awareness is already near peak. Just like how I am already aware of Fortnite having amazing prizes and BTS being wildly popular. Vtubers haven't reached market saturation in the west. Not even close. Japan is a bit closer of course. Sure, people in Japan know who Kizuna is, but I think it stops there. It's maybe from a year or two ago, but Ai was the only vtuber that many Jp could name (if they could name any). I don't know about you but I wouldn't talk to most of my guy friends about vtubers the same way that girls will talk to each other about kpop. Mcdonalds even had their BTS meal. I don't have a single anime friend who doesn't know about vtubers or Gura. It's more that many of them have already heard about the concept, but refuse to watch because 3DPD. Think of them as the zoomer equivalent of MTV rounding up the latest hits. There’s a couple that are actually worthwhile and don’t just overemote screams and gasps, usually ones that stay within a narrow focus where the creator has some actual knowledge and background. Getting a professional’s insight into something can be really interesting, like a vocal coach reacting to a singer or a composer reacting to a score. My rule of thumb is that if the video isn’t twice as long as the content it’s breaking down, it’s probably not worth watching since they’re not gonna be able to add much value, but it also helps to look at their other videos to see if they just react to weeb stuff in general or actually focus on music.

Ironically enough, the videos almost always end up being claimed by whatever they’re reacting to if it’s music, so all that ad revenue is going to Sony/Suisei anyway.

All the ones who’re doing Suzy right now are probably just weeb grifters, so I wouldn’t expect anything useful from them, but this channel is a great example of adding a lot of value. There’s some smaller ones that have done other stuff from the first take that I found interesting. One of them commented on how Lisa and Aimer both didn’t try to disguise or hide their breathing but instead incorporated it, noting it was a very Japanese singing thing compared to Western singers, even in produced music. It gave me something to listen for and now I have a deeper appreciation for why I find some singers so human in their recordings vs others who try to cover it up, and how much it can influence the feeling of a song. A great example of this is Bye Bye Teddy Bear where hearing Hachi’s breathing makes it feel so much more intimate and powerful.

I watched most of this video just now, few thoughts.
I don't like how much she emotes at certain parts of the song, almost making me feel like I should have some kind of similar reaction. Nobody listens to music like this. I'm already autistic and watch vtubers, so it just makes me uncomfortable.
I do agree with most of her thoughts, but the fact that I had the same thoughts as her multiple times tells me that I can already listen critically when I want to. I'm fairly comfortable in my theory knowledge, but if it is lacking anywhere it is surely on the vocal technique side. So maybe it could be a useful channel. At least I did subscribe. Well I'm a piano and brass musician who has never sang, so I guess it's not too surprising that vocals is my weak spot.
For me there is a time to listen to music critically and a time to listen to music for enjoyment. Listening critically takes my full focus, and I try to only do it on my hifi over the ear headphones.
About Lisa and Aimer... I think Lisa's breathing has already come up in this general at one point or another. Went back and listened to homura (lisa) and zankyo Sanka (aimer) first takes to refresh my thoughts. Personally, I don't like how harsh Lisa's breathing sounds. It's worked into the performance , that much is true. but it just sounds like her desperately grasping for air on every new phrase. For me, it adds nothing of value to the music. On the other hand, Aimers breaths on Zankyo Sanka are light inhales that enhance the song for me personally. But someone could have the opposite opinion and thats valid.
Well I'll admit that I'm a hachiposter so you'll get a biased answer. I love how she sounds on this song, and it is indeed one where the breathing choices enhance the song for me personally.
