Split the game into Pure Nippon Who Can Do No Wrong, Hitler Would Be Proud Europeans Living in a Dark Hole and True Route That Will Be 20 Bucks Please DLC.
Removed character petting minigame from localized versions, sure it was a dumb minigame but it's still allowed to exist, localization is fucked with one infamous Support conversation between two assassins being replaced entirely by ellipsis for no reason. A big chunk of the units were also literally copypasted from FE Awakening for fanservice.
Gameplay wise it's still pretty good especially the Conquest route and the music is good as always but the games story is just dumb and many of the characters are unlikable.
There's a bunch of games that are worth playing before considering touching Fates.

Very very shallow characters because they wanted everyone to marry everyone, which is kind of hard to make believable in 4 conversations. the most infamous one is Saizo and Felicia, where he berates and tells her she's terrible at her job then she falls in love with him.

While all fire emblems have bad and good units, Fates takes it to the extreme. The royal units are so strong that they drown other similar units and in harder difficulties, not using them is just plain dumb. For example, Arthur is terrible because his personal skill makes him a crit magnet, while Takumi can literally walk on water
>Gameplay
People who say Fates is fine never played it more than once, it has among the worst maps in the franchise (even though it has a few really good ones) that use infuriating gimmicks, the skills are boring but overpowered, the partner up system is good but its also too strong.
Then there's skill inheritance and reclassing, both tedious grind festas that intentionally had a separate paid dlc to ''patch it''.
Finally the weapons were the biggest offenders. Most Weapons had such harsh penalties that made it so you spent most of the game with the same 2-3 weapons and maybe one interesting weapon to use in a niche situation. The waterwheel, a S rank lance you had to bust your ass to use, halved your stats after use, meaning that using it to finish a powerful enemy was its only use, because any other enemy could kick your ass
>Hidden weapons
Ever got hit by an enemy that can one round your mages, attack from both close and afar, is way too fast to be doubled reliably AND even when they cant hurt your high DEF units, they can cut your stats in almost half because hidden weapons debuff regardless of damage done?
Also these enemies can stack debuffs in harder difficulties
Overall, Fates is terrible from start to finish and the only thing it ever did was have Azura, who i want to fuck until my dick falls off

I'd also add that the justification for keeping child units is so terrible that it deserves a special mention beyond the already dumb story.
Awakening let you pair up units and recruit their child, and in that case, it fit the plot and was a pretty popular feature. So of course they decided to keep it, but instead making the story work with it again, you pretty much just toss the babies in a dimension that works like Dragonball's Time Chamber until they're old enough to fight.
