There was a lot of excitement because it was so fresh. Turns out streaming can be pretty tough and not everyone is able to keep it up. Especially people with terminal brainworms or awful health conditions.

As for the aspie thing, they did go about shilling each other in a blatant way and took a while to integrate, but I can't help but think the thread (including me) way overreacted to them.

It's something that happens with 4chan based communities in general. Starts off with a small group of likeminded people usually on the cutting edge of something new or indulging in a niche hobby together. Then eventually people come in looking for drama and schizos take roost as the community grows, and since 4chan moderation is weak at best they begin to fester. I miss the optimism as well, though I don't think the current iteration of the thread is all doom and gloom since things have certainly hit much lower points for much longer.

As for why some chuubas exploded and others haven't really there's a multitude of reasons. Budget or talent for good models, life preventing them from streaming, lacking persistent fans here to keep their names in the public consciousness, menhera, actually being an asshole, never catching a big break, unfortunate timeslots, etc. There's just so many factors to success that it's hard to really point to any one thing as the origin of making it.

Thing is, many chuubas come here without anonymous board experience and take everything at face value. Only a few seem to handle it.
And I don't mean it like a insult, many vtubers I like or liked have had a terrible approach and should have stayed away. Among the most offending cases would be Eira, Sloth, Krimbo.

Some like Nyaru do have the experience but also know they can't always handle it so well, it's why she went to wvt a while after Yoro when she had enough support that it would be safe. But you can't and shouldn't expect a friendly environment.
