unironically I've had more luck doing the pika approach and just repeating everything I say back to myself in japanese. It helps me learn how to formulate my thoughts in japanese better on the fly

The only thing guess I'd argue with is that she started out with the "don't worry about kanji" thing when it is definitely something you need to look at right away since you can't rely on there being furigana on everything. Recommending Duolingo is honestly fine since it gives you a good reference for the hiragana and katakana that gets carried around with you if it's on a phone, and it bugs you until you get used to studying.
