As for it being part of larger words, yes that's true. In >>40212895, I included the onyomi "sei" which covers your 惑星 (wakusei) example. Onyomi, are often used in multi kanji words, however we know to use the reading "hoshi" for 星, because Suisei read her name that way.

Humans can't even do it without knowing the context and intended meaning behind what's written.
