The game has always been this way. On less populated servers it can be slightly less problematic, but if I had to guess it's probably whatever is also currently plaguing Minecraft and making things seem really chuggy.

I once fell from the highest point in the game to the lowest point in the game and survived. Then I did it again, and again after that, and again. The highest amount of fall damage that can be taken is 800 HP of fall damage. If you have above 800 HP then feel free to travel any mountains or cliffs. Sounds like you don't though so stick to plains and large bodies of water.

I felt that way about this time last year. I didn't go through with it but I was in lurk mode for a few days. Honestly I couldn't tell you what made me get over it, I'm pretty sure nobody even noticed I was MIA at the time.
