i was skeptical of people's claims of a meaningful difference in the past, but it was because i was doing it wrong. i was just comparing my live premiere recordings with the archived videos and they were basically the same. but the problem with that is that youtube attenuates the volume for archived videos to make them all of a standard loudness. when you have something like this with extreme peak limiting pushed all the way up to the maximum volume, you end up with lots of points where you're asking the D/A converter to reconstruct a waveform that exceeds the maximum level of 0 dBFS due to intersample overs. as far as i can tell, premieres aren't attenuated, so something like this with very poor mastering will have tons of clipping in the premiere (which means tons of awful higher-order distortion products), but after it's archived, youtube pulls it down like 8 dB before it gets to your DAC and it ends up much cleaner.

there are really only a handful of audio bitrates available on youtube. you get the best one at 480p for sure, and i think even at 360p. the audio for 480, 720, on up to 4k is all identical. download them with yt-dlp and extract them with ffmpeg to compare if you don't believe me.
