And if you look at the blessings, none of them are random either. he chose metalwork for a nation famous for its blacksmiths, he chose warmth for a nation in cold climate, he chose bigger breasts and better breastfeeding for a natin that had mention of their women being mostly smallbreasted except for the high priests. None of these are random but in fact play to some degree into their lore.

So to say he is glossing over things, when he is clearly trying to intake lore of others is really bad faith. i said that was the inevitable result. if it was something that could forcibly turn an entire nation's population into mindslaves there wouldn't be a question about it. you know, nukes aren't the only kind of wmd, right? there are wmds that are just designed to cause blackouts via emps, or wmds that are designed to alter weather, or even economies. in this setting, there is a wmd that effects magic, and it operates exactly in the same way as what he described. i am not painting him in the worst light possible, i am clarifying what he is doing, partially by his own admission mind you, which, though logically accurate, sounds reasonably bad, given that it is actually pretty bad. i'm not accusing him of doing it intentionally, we all know he is new and that he can't help it, in fact, if you read a few posts after what you were responding to (unfortunately you neglected the reply link) you would see that i never wanted to make it look like i was punishing him or anything, but that i just wanted to correct him on a few things that i viewed as important.

you are responding to my first post. that was before he corrected me on that, i now know what he meant by it. it has been a while since then, where were you when this started?

we tried to correct him a few times, he didn't notice most of them. tbf, we weren't clear enough, and i apologized for not stepping up and trying to make it more apparent to him, but at the time of writing that i didn't know why he didn't respond to me, more on that later.

i said he didn't do much research on us. he may have picked up the word, but he didn't pick up the meaning, or in this case the name vs the culture, which was my main point. it was surface level research, just because you can point to someone and have them regurgitate trivia like "the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" on command doesn't mean they have done enough research into what that means to actually understand it. same with the chuubanite system, i didn't say he knew nothing at all about it, he clearly knows about a few pieces of lore, but it's clear he doesn't know how all the pieces work together to form a comprehensive structure. it was my intention to try to assist him with that, given how much it was neglected.

see above. when have i ever said that? i have repeatedly said that anything can be done with this magic system, you just need to make sure the explanation fits. the effect you desire is perfectly available to you, you just can't make it operate based on arbitrary criteria that shouldn't have any real connection to the result they describe. if you think in terms of "can it be explained" the answer is automatically yes, but the question of "can it be explained in that specific way" doesn't cross your mind unless you think "is it explained" and then you'll actually have to put some effort into protecting the magic system instead of just making people feel good and worrying about the consequences later.

that seems fair, but keep in mind that there is an easy way to counter /meat/ raids even if you ignore the whole metagaming "we only do it if your rep agrees to it" stuff. the way he does it is subtle enough that people aren't supposed to notice it, and doesn't require them to put themselves in any kind of a vulnerable position. they literally need a few hundred children and some magic rocks, and they can curse an entire nation, not just the coasts, with things that can contradict their core concept and still remain theoretically just as powerful.
granted, he wanted the magnitude to be the part of it that varied purely based on whatever the other nation agreed to, which i don't think makes sense. i suggested that it should depend on how well the concept aligned with their core concept, which both increases the difficulty of using it by making them need to understand the culture they are cursing, while at the same time balancing their effect around how dramatically it would change their lore, rather than something arbitrary. i have a few ideas of how to make the idea work better, most of them you can probably guess based on what i have been saying as far back as the first comment, and if he agreed to make those changes i think i would be fine with him having that effect as a trump-card, but whatever.
as for my bias, i did admit in one of the three parts of my first post in that discussion that i was, in fact, biased, but i also tried to explain my reasoning behind it regardless. if he decides to maintain it, i have no control over his decision because unlike the chuubanite system, there really isn't any precedent that a thread can't just randomly declare war on a group because they sound bad, desu, we do make ourselves seem like savages, and the fact that /hag/ has connection to v7 means they are going to tell them just enough to make them believe we are still savages, while also knowing the fact that we aren't quite the primitives we say we are.
it makes sense for them to curse us, i just would rather avoid that personally, especially since i know that the meta explanation stems from an innocent misunderstanding. it was innocent, he had no intention of being threatening, and he certainly didn't mean for what he said to have any influence on lore, but for some reason we didn't communicate soon enough to clear up the misunderstanding. it also doesn't help that the curse is incredibly fitting with out current major problem irl, meme magic and what not it just seems like an unfortunate course of events that really shouldn't have happened the way they did.
with that said, i really do think their idea is tantamount to a wmd, and i don't think there is anything on quite the same level as it in our setting. it might seem small because people aren't used to talking about statistics from such a large scale, but on the scale of nations, small things matter considerably. if it is allowed to influence a culture in the way they described it, i do genuinely believe that technology could be very easily abused, and would realistically be used by people who might not have the foresight to properly use them. the risks of error would likewise be extreme, i am not exaggerating when i say it's a planet-scale catastrophe waiting to happen without regulations on the exact details of how it works.
if you want, i can try to explain that a bit more, i'll admit that it is hard, but i think there is a chance if you've read what i've already said that you might have an idea of it. basically it's the butterfly effect. a skilled user could control the world, an unskilled user could destroy the world, either way, the result would be far reaching and catastrophic for every other nation, and potentially the nation in control of it. it could rather easily create a far more reaching harm than /meat/ cults and raids ever could have, and there is effectively no counter or easily exploited vulnerability, with an almost negligible cost to cast. the only reason it wouldn't be abused would be due to metagaming. i don't want that to be how it works, so of course i have concerns about it. that's my opinion at least. if you have any questions, please ask.

that's a good start, but if i am not mistaken, once the glyph is formed, as long as they stay alive the effects linger. really, i think the fact that it is a single person is the main problem i have with it. imagine trying to find and assassinate a single person holed up somewhere in another nation at this time period. divination might help you figure out that it is happening at all, and can then help you find them, but that requires divination. if you don't even realize you are being effected without divination, it it less of a counter and more of an ability check, like fighting a stand user in jojo as a normal person who can't fight, harm, or even see most stands, let alone use any of their abilities.

that creates powercreep, and assumes an even playing field. imagine a scenario where the only viable way to counter someone with a wmd is to have one yourself. actually, you don't have to, it's called m.a.d, and it nearly lead to the extinction of the human race. if only one nation has it, that nation is the indisputable king. if two nations have it, they are rivals for that title, every additional nation that has it increases the likelihood of everyone else dying. nukes are fairly isolated in their effects, either you blow up the facility housing and creating them, or you blow up your enemy. when it comes to these wmds, a mistake has the risk of making the planet inhospitable for human existence, the proper use of it has the risk of taking over a nation and their people, possibly even assimilating them, without the need for any bloodshed or risk. it can all be done remotely. again, i am ok with it existing as long as we add restraints onto it, but i don't think it's current version has nearly enough restraints. add to the sacrifice/complexity of the ritual, write into the mechanics of the magic itself, not as arbitrary fiat but as a core aspect of it's function, the need to only be able to influence a nation by emphasizing negative or positive aspects of their existing culture, not something else entirely.
some guy said all the blessings fit with their given thread, (not so much their threads core concept) and maybe i sound biased for saying this, but that isn't the case for /meat/, and /hag/anon specifically said he wanted the effect of the magic to be that we rely more on hags in our lives, ie a change in our culture. that is the intended effect, and that is the biggest source of concern that i have regarding this whole thing. remove his ability to use that magic to puppeteer other nations, and i'll be perfectly fine with him gaining the ability to strengthen certain aspects of an existing culture through blessings and curses, just not in a way that would realistically take their agency away from them. basically, all i'm asking is for us to define exactly how it works, and make sure it can't be used for more extreme things.

am i wrong about that? and that addresses only one of my points, and not even the most important ones. do you agree or disagree that it should work well with the mechanisms of the chuubanite system, and that, if not balanced properly, the ability to influence a nation in the way they described basically constitutes a wmd? even if you say bad luck could interrupt the process of establishing the glyph for as long as it takes for them to try again, the fact that the result is so disproportionate should showcase what i am talking about. if you want to add these requirements to my suggestions, that's fine, but the mechanics are also worth considering, see what i said about burning children to ashes and supposedly maintaining their core concepts in the form of the ashes, only to then somehow derive the concept of a nation from those ashes.
if you take the ship of theseus, and burn one of them to ashes, would the ashes become synonymous to the nation of greece? is it ok to have those kinds of jumps in logic in our setting? i want our magic system to be grounded, but also flexible, but some people would rather make it arbitrary and incoherent. it's unfortunate that /hag/anon ended up getting stuck between this debate over whether or not this should be a world building thread, or an especially inbred, yet not quite collaborative /wg/ knockoff.

The Black Fleet has been able to thwart us time and time again, alongside the newly conceived Knight Order. The Gulf is also a hotspot for other rival activities. We may have some /nasfaqg/ privateers against us, crossed paths with /ahoy/ pirates and /watamelon/ corsairs. I think we are also open to underwater attacks by /ggg/. Which is an important factor as our trade island is next to /ggg/.
As for our viking raids, nations with established counterespionage and inquisition activity will be able to disrupt our information network, leading to failed or dismal raids. Such examples in the Gulf are /morig/ with their Goddess Faithful inquisitions and Towa being a hivemind.
- Land conflict
I believe that our land army is our weakness as there were no major histories of us being aggressive to our southern neighbours. I think we are on friendly terms with /hfz/ based on Founder's story. Land conflict would usually involve schizo invasions either inland or from the seas. With our priority on marine conflict, our terrestrial army would mostly be composed of marines. Able to aid in raids or landing invasions, but nothing beyond the coast.
