Anime and gaming peaked sometime between 2005-2009 so I can see why she would choose to stay there. Marine does the same as do many other people who were old enough to be gaming and watching anime at that time. After 2009, anime was basically just copy paste of the same thing that the medium converged onto back then which is why anime from 2009 looks the same as anime does today. Games also stopped improving much graphically after Crysis or technically after HL2.
