hello crawfriends! a new recording is up with my old layout, old vtuber designs/model, and some other stuff here (including a thank you to this general for all the help): https://youtu.be/GTUPOUQChPI
i think it's really interesting to see how things have gradually changed with time! :}

to any other aspiring vtubers who need help with character designing, i'd be more than happy to help you! i can't offer much other than rough sketches and visual redesigning, but it would be better than nothing. i can also sell off my two older vtuber designs if anyone would want them (i'd work with you to make them not as generic of course)

on another topic, i'd like to start networking and promoting myself on reddit, but i've had very limited use of the site. would i just basically post links to my stream along with artworks on vtuber subreddits there? or is there a better way of shilling? i also thought of going on tiktok, but im too intimidated eheh...

Thanks for the drop shrimp, I'll check it out. As for networking on Reddit it's generally known that it's nigh impossible to get any traction from Reddit due to all the vtuber subreddit being saturated with either Hololive or other indies spamming to indies.

I've been doing my reps and noticed something off. Specifically, I seem to be much more talkative, original, and funny when I'm in a collab or at least have someone to bounce off of. To the point where I feel like people should be telling me to shut up. Conversely, my chat isn't active enough to do that when I solo stream, which leads to a lot of awkward pauses and anxiety. Do I need to just accept I'm only funny in a group, or is this something I can grind out?

If VRoid is too much for you, there's a circle of very small time japanese indie vtubers that use VKatsu for their models (the worksafe version of Koikatsu Party!) It's 100% free if you wanna throw a character together real quick and see what you can come up with.

I'm not exactly sure how reliable it is, but you it also lets you export your characters to Niconico3d to use in VirtualCast for about $50 per character. I'd be surprised if they ratted you out for using the free built-in capture tool, though.

nta but i'm an active chuuba with notoriously bad tracking equipment, the software you choose will make a massive difference
if you use a 3d model, the tracking will generally be better, and i would recommend vseeface heavily.
positioning of the camera and lighting make a massive difference heres a link vseeface.icu
it's a free program so see how well it works, i've used it with a 14 year old low resolution camera and a 40 dollar taiwan-special one to get comparatively good results
as far as investing goes, audio first, tracking second, but there is nothing wrong with being a png-tuber to see if you even like streaming
make sure to carefully calibrate your tracking, watch your own vods to make sure it's content you yourself would find interesting and do recordings to test your audio for issues before streams
>>3797533
i've used 3tene and it's pretty bad compared to vseeface, at least these days
i don't think vseeface existed when you made those clips last summer though
>>3797840
someone i know went through hell trying to get koikatsu/vkatsu to work so i'd be wary of recommending it, blender/unity exports can be troublesome if you havent gone through the process before and is very picky with version numbers

>How will they know I browse 4chan
If you don't tell them sure they don't know, and that doesn't matter anyway, you're right. I'm talking about the specific context when you said you won't shill on Twitter, assumedly because you wanted to shill only on 4chan?

>Parasitic
Yeah, that's what I meant by loyalty. To be a parasite you have to only take and not give back. Just being on the site was giving back enough, but you feel like you have to also stay and educate the newer ones? Fine. Then isn't that enough?

But then you also said specifically that you will go beyond that and not shill on Twitter, but instead imply you will continue to try your luck on the site where you sarcastically put your debuff in spoilers and where every reply told to just not stream or to hide it better. Is that the overt LGBT propaganda you were talking about? Because I really don't get it. I guess we really do disagree on everything, so fine, if you enjoy it, I guess there's nothing wrong with it. I am in the same boat. Started a YouTube channel last year, got close to 1k subs and my vids get, on average, more than 1k views. I am now slowly trying to transition from mostly scripted and edited videos to ones where I am talking freely. My usual content is 5 - 10 minutes in length and recently I did a stream-like video which went for almost an hour. Views were down by 50 % but my subscribers seemed to enjoy it, it was more like normal YT discocery failed me and so I did not really reach beyond my usual circle.

Either way, my big plan is to eventually stream a couple of times with my "real face" and so on just to see if people enjoy me and if they do, I'll transition to VTubing.

Hello anons! i wanted to ask some questions.
What is the most used vtuber 'concept' out there? I know that there is a HUGE amount of sharks (but by the looks of it, people are slowly stopping trying to become shark vtubers), what else? Someone mentioned the other day that vampires is the most overused one, when I would think that succubus would be the most popular one, considering that a lot of VTubers are using ''lewdness'' in order to gain attention. And is it really bad to use overused concept? With shark part I can understand, seeing every 2nd VTuber being a shark is annoying as hell. (I guess i answered my own question)

Another question, would you prefer it if a VTuber paid money for a model, or would you admire the efforts if a person created everything themselves? I personally prefer creating everything by myself, I know it's difficult but it feels more rewarding, even though I can't consider myself to be 'the very best' artist, more like, a normal one. I just want an opinion.

>> No.3811491

>>3810871
a lot of people really like self-mades, especially for artists
i like self-mades because they can be worked on continuously and improved, new outfits can be done on a whim instead of on a wait list, self sufficiency is the way to go unless you aren't willing to put in the effort
the most used 'concepts' in no particular order are, guys in a hoody, vampires, succubus, cat, fox, dog, skeletons, bunnies,
thats not to say you can't stand out in each of these 'concepts', you aren't generic and boring just because of other peoples content
a lot of people overlook how little the model itself matter, theres are tonnes of successful people in all these over saturated designs, but it's not the design that makes them successful, it's their actual abilities.
Yes that even includes coomer bait succubi, you need to be able to act coomer bait, not just shell out for a nearly nude model

>> No.3811939

>>3810871
I don't mind overused concepts when they are well done. So if you want to be nekomimi tuber #85399 go ahead. Then again, some designs by themselves probably already have limited appeal, like a shark, so people are probably going to be satiated from a shark tuber much faster than from neko tubers.

As for your other question: it's up to you. I like seeing people that did everything themselves... if it's up to a decent standard. If you are going to be a literal stickman VTuber, I admire that you did the drawing and the rigging... but it's a stickman. I think you are your own best judge if the quality of your work is "good enough", where you also understand that "good enough" does not mean Brian Tsui rigging and Ayamy level character design

>> No.3812033

>>3810871
Cats, dogs, skimpy outfit e-thottery, etc. are all overdone. Doesn't mean you can't find success, but more than it'll be difficult to stand out from all the rest of the succubi-themed vtubers with horns.

Scuffed models are endearing, but at the end of the day your main content will be how entertaining you are on stream.

>> No.3812054

>>3810871
Demons and Catgirls are the most overused imo.

As for the second question, I really like when people try to create their own models, but I and most new people stumbling across your stream value the end product at the end of the day, and prefer it when Vtubers actually have something nice to look at. That's why I've hired a character designer to draw up a sheet for me so I can 3D model it myself with Blender

Excuse me, what? I don't know of many shark vtubers outside Gura and Artemis, but I don't really follow every single debuting vtuber. There's enough that no matter what you think of there'll already be 3 nobody vtubers doing the same thing, so that isn't a consideration.

And as a viewer I really don't see why I'd care whether they made the model itself. I guess it would be impressive, but if that 'self made' aspect just means a lower quality model it'll be worse over time.

speaking of reddit shilling, do you guys think it's a good idea to post my stream on the suberddit of the specific game/genre i'm streaming, as long as self promotion is allowed in the subreddit? i'm just starting out and i'm not sure if it would help out at all. also should i make the post as myself or make a random account, leave a few comments and then make a post like 'wow here's this cool new vtuber i found who caters to this niche'?

Shill yourself everywhere you think you can get away with it, provided it won't provoke any ill will.

If the subreddit seems chill, and people wouldn't mind then, I would suggest you go for it. If the subreddit is hostile or overrun by content, maybe look somewhere else.

Making accounts to shill yourself is 100% noticeable by Reddit mods and will get you banned. Would not reccomend unless you have a bunch of old burner accounts, in witch case it's probably worth while.

Yeah, I was worried about that. Basic idea for the character is that he's a chuuni still in high school, but instead of being "Dark Flame Master" or "Harbinger of Chaos" type edge, he swung the other way around to being a "Hero of Justice" wannabe type. Basically just cosplaying with while going to school and everything.

Yeah, in retrospect it might be pretty weird, but the general idea for that was to kinda roleplay with the game if anything. Like, If I'm fighting the final boss of a game I could just pull something like a G Gundam "Take this! My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow!" for the final attack. my concern is that if you're playing games like that, you're probably gonna be playing some type of JPRG, which is already a debuff genre of game on its own. plus, in JRPGs, the game's main characters usually pull off that kind of monologue already, so you'd just be stacking on top of that, which is kinda weird.

unless you're talking about like, doing a main quest play through of Skyrim and you monologue something right before last hitting, but honestly just sounds like cringe. but you do you man, if you can keep the kayfabe going, more power to you.

Literally any game is a debuff game, you're either:

a) Playing a popular game everybody plays while being at the bottom of the category and no one pays attention to you because they can watch bigger/more popular people.

b) Playing a game nobody plays, being at the bottom at the directory, hoping someone autistic enough to want to watch that one specific game finds you.

c) Try to chase the mythical unicorn that's a game that's popular but doesn't have many streamers and hoping other streamers aren't grabbing all the attention.

Your start is going to be difficult regardless, so play something you actually enjoy because at least you're having fun while streaming for 0 viewers.

you basically put in a bid to the artist, requesting your art (with descriptions and references) and then a chunk of money. if the artist likes it, they'll accept the request and after a couple of days/weeks you get the finished product.

the catch that you can only communicate once and only once (via your initial request) and you are not allowed to contact the artist about the skeb in any other capacity.

the service was made because a lot of JP artists were pissed off at demanding american commissioners who kept demanding constant changes and pissing off artists. the convenience of not having constant interruptions and revision requests from the buyer is why so many JP artists will use it.

honestly, i've just been going through the New Creators list https://skeb.jp/users?sort=date (just a bunch of artists who've recently joined Skeb), and click through to their twitter profile and see if like their style.

This, one angle is that if your joke is that you're sort of generic, make it extremely generic and make it clear that that's your joke, and you're not just being generic because you're uninspired. Maybe make an extremely convoluted alternative outfit and have your character sometimes make allusions to how they'll never wear it as they hate it.

Reminder for next thread to remove the "opsec" guide in the resources pastebin (because it's mostly useless info) and replace it with the actual opsec guide below:

1 - Don't post personal information on social media. Names, addresses, selfies, photos with exif data still attached, etc. If you're posting irl photos, take it, sleep on it, and recheck it in the morning for reflections and shit.

2 - Use a separate email address solely dedicated to your vtuber identity that will serve as a nexus for all your accounts.

2.5 - Use a separate browser entirely for your personal life and your vtuber life. I use Firefox for personal use and my vtuber is a scrub who uses Microsoft Edge. This ensures zero possibility of an auto-fill, bookmark, or even social media account logged in yab. (Don't import settings from one to the other, obviously).

3 - Create a fresh Steam account and use the Steam Family Share feature to access games that are already installed on your computer (that you own on your Main). There will be no way to connect your new Steam account to your old account as Steam does not reveal Family Share status (unless you're screencapping the actual Steam window itself, which... why would you ever do that?)

4 - Write down a completely generic and random name that's not associated with you or anyone you know. Day[9]'s was "Felicity." Write that name on a stickynote and stick it on your monitor's bottom bezel. Whenever you tell a story about "someone", you're going to reference "Felicity" (or whatever other name). This is here to help you avoid naming real life people you know.

5 - Google search "Your Name" + "City". You'll find that there's like 20 different 'public info' database websites. They all have methods on opt-ing out and removing your data. Doesn't mean the data is gone, just means that the particular website you requested data removal from won't make it so obviously easy.

6 - Create a completely separate Windows User profile for your vtuber avatar and install all your vtuber related programs on here. This will ensure there is virtually no way for your files located on your personal profile to cross over. (Note: You'll have to reinstall all your games, and for Steam, reinstall a new set of games with your main, then Family Share it over to your vtuber account. This adds extra layers of clunkiness but provides a greater level of separation between your personal Windows profile and the vtuber one.)

I'm trying to design a male vtuber and it's so hard to do it compared to female desings.

I guess the convenience of just putting shirt and pants contributes to male designs being so plain, compared to women who have thousands of clothing options. So if don't want plain Joe or overdesigned video game character, finding a middleground that's interesting it's hard.

And then there's the cuteness factor, even a girl with a hoodie can be a cute tomboy, while a guy with a hoodie becomes just sloppy. I understand the appeal of turning babiniku better now, it's like playing a female character on a MMO because you can make the girls cute.

I managed to get one design going, but the feedback I got is that it doesn't fit my personality at all and would be better spent on someone more extroverted and naive. So back to square one.

Try looking up fashion posts on Pintrest and Tumblr, or look for clothes on Etsy. I usually come up with a theme for a character and select what would be the standard outfit, but then alter it in a way by adding, subtracting, or replacing elements. Looking here might stir up some ideas as well especially if you're going for a fantasy theme:
https://ffxiv.eorzeacollection.com/glamours/men
Although there's a good chunk of people who dislike the Arknights aesthetic, the costumes get away from the standard style a bit. Most of these are for females, but the few male ones here might help: https://gamepress.gg/arknights/database/skin-list
Other than these specifically, looking up official art of characters could help since most of them are made by actual character designers.

It may be weird, but I'm trying to avoid the fashion references for now because I feel it would take the design feeling closer to ikemen/cool guy style that wouldn't fit me - like, it's not what I idealistically would aim for and I can't see myself fitting the role either, even when playing a character.

I guess I have a vague feeling of what I'm aiming for and on a sliding scale of cute to cool it skews towards cute... the design I made that I liked would not be out of place on, let's say, a Kid Icarus crossover with Touhou.

I have a couple other ideas, but they'd feel too derivative. So it needs more design exploration, I guess.

>>3853723
I have been taking a loot at my artbooks and have done some character design myself in the past, albeit for my own projects.

The issue I'm running with is that designs usually service a story/scenario, and while having a character backstory can help it, for a vtuber it's not that significant - I mean, even if your backstary says you're a survior of the nuclear holocaust, you're not running around post-nuclear wastelands, you're in front of the screen, and that demands a design that has a more immediate appeal out of context over, let's say, a variation on the themes of Fallout or Mad Max that would be perfectly fine within a story/scenario.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it.

>> No.3856320

>>3855276
Consider the following:
- Who are you and what makes your desing reveal that interesting? - Do you alreayd have a viewer/follower base for which the design would be a novelty and make them talk about it to others?
- Why would someone follow you for your design reveal when there's people whose designs have already been revealed and are already streaming with theirs?
- And if someone follows for the design reveal, why would they keep following/watching once they get what they were looking for?
- How succesful have others who tried this strategy have been in retaining the attention of the audience/follower-base?

I just don't get these kinds of gimmicks - you're building anticipation for a PNG while you could do a reveal and work on building an audience for yourself - but if it has worked for others, why not?

Judging from a design alone, most would be more interested in watching a sunlight-deprived nuclear holocaust survivor who has a bunch of keepsakes strapped onto his collar and is half-dressed in a hazmat suit over guy in a tuxedo #48392. Of course your actual ability to entertain is most important, but I feel like most would click on a stream with a nuclear holocaust survivor on the thumbnail over a catboy or something. It's true that being ikemen/cute will net you more fans, but what's stopping you from being a cute nuclear holocaust survivor?

DO NOT. This kills your reaction averages and you're essentially fucking yourself over.
Actively commenting inane shit does the same. Comment things that will net you likes.

Man, reading this feels kinda sad. And we all wonder why twitter is a shithole, people thinking like this. I know you're trying to make money in this venture but it feels so soulless.

They are kind of right though. Commenting just for the sake of commenting sorta give a bad vibe compared to commenting on someone because you're a friend.

>If you don't tell them sure they don't know, and that doesn't matter anyway, you're right. I'm talking about the specific context when you said you won't shill on Twitter, assumedly because you wanted to shill only on 4chan?
Not what I meant, I mean I'm not going to suddenly start looking elsewhere for a fanbase because "this one is bad and hates me"
>Yeah, that's what I meant by loyalty. To be a parasite you have to only take and not give back. Just being on the site was giving back enough, but you feel like you have to also stay and educate the newer ones? Fine. Then isn't that enough?
The recompense I get from educating newfags is nothing, when talking about streaming as a vtuber, that's almost inherently a business. Why are you acting like I'm doing my target audience some kind of favor? This is an equal exchange here. Even if I never get a superchat, if I get a loyal following of people who watch my content that gives me inherently more options than I had before to do almost anything.
>where you sarcastically put your debuff in spoilers and where every reply told to just not stream or to hide it better.
Yes, because this website is full of autistic and sarcastic people with often times minimal social skills. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now if it weren't for their advice either. Not just here but in pretty much every thread I'm learning stuff about what does and doesn't work, and multiple people already said I could hit the target if I took the right steps, instead of told me to get fucked. The main reason I dismissed your statements out of hand though wasn't even because you mentioned twitter but because you acted like I should abandon this audience and pursue some woke millennial crowd like sharkfag or something.
> I guess we really do disagree on everything, so fine
I really am more interested in the audience available to me here. Both in tone and quality, I feel like I will have more growth even if it involves climbing more hills.

It's not like the people who post here are an endless resource, but the banter, camaraderie, and genuine behavior and reactions are time and time again something anyone with good thick skin can measure themselves with, while the people who seethe and complain on other sites end up either irrelevant or at the very least, pushing out work that is quietly regarded as mediocre or worse.

unless you're Calli tier at content production, have released albums in Spotify, have a portfolio of at least 2+ years worth of consistent creation, and experience as a public entertainer, no men have a chance.

gotta realize that there are hundreds of thousands of highly skilled women who already meet those criteria. you need to meet and then surpass those to get over the male debuff to even have a shot. the success of HoloEN shot the bar up to the sky. there's a ton of money to be made there and it's a lot easier to get returns with a cute girl doing cute things.
