The franchise will never truly recover from KF2 but KF3 and the KemoV girls are free from its evil. Take a look, this dog has not been abused at all.

makes me wonder if they're going to push for even more friends along the line, though there's plenty to choose from as is. I mostly just take a look at coyo and gururu when I can, they stand out the most for me.

V-tuber designs. The top ones are faithful to the originals, or are the originals, but the bottom ones might be trying to appeal more to people interested in Vtubers. Geoffroy's Cat in particular already had a design that was completely different from the one her vtuber got.

That or they might be trying to make the designs fit the actual streamers. They probably didn't have a streamer who would fit Geoffroy's loli-design for example. A lot of them are originals too.

I think it's just that they didnt want to step on the toes of KF1 again, so they avoided most of the main cast/popular characters. yes, there are (was) the penguing(s) from the original show and the more recent caracal, but I'd say they're far less popular characters than serval or arai-san for example. it's interesting to think what would've happened if they just straight up put kaban and serval out there as their first vtubers, but it's probably needless to say absolutely no one wants to jump into boots that big. that could've caused alot of flak too, so they're better left untouched in my opinion. I find that the lesser known friends are better suited for this thing.

that's why I find the caracunt addition rather interesting, maybe they're trying to slowly introduce more familiar, already known faces to their ranks? that, or just try to wash away the sour taste of KF2 from peoples mouths; I'd bet my ass the vtuber is more likeable than the actual show's character. (havent watched her once.)

KF isn't trying to 'distance itself' from the first anime at all. KF3, a mobile game, has been most of the franchise since the disaster that was the second anime and they have plenty of callbacks to it. I'd say they're trying much harder to distance themselves from KF2 since they've largely returned to the original mobage's world. Serval and Arai-san are still heavily involved in KF3.

Keep in mind most of those designs were made specifically for the KemoV, Cape Penguin/Island Fox/more or less the entire second generation didn't exist before, or if they did then they had different designs. I'm actually kind of confused they included a character like Caracal, especially since she's not the original VA apparently, but I'm guessing they wanted to bring her back since she's taken a pretty huge backseat since the original mobage.

Whatever the case it hardly has anything to do with "stepping on the toes of KF1", if anything they'd probably want to appeal to that audience as much as possible but sadly they can't just admit KF2 was a mistake and I can't imagine Irodori would ever go back to work with Kadokawa after the abhorrent treatment they were given and the creative freedom Aniplex offers them.

speaking of the game, so you have played it? how is it? I refuse to touch any gacha games so I've completely passed on it. I think there's some translations of the overall plot/scenes but I havent taken a look at those either.

I haven't played it, it's a gacha game. It's a very high quality gacha game with a lot of funny dialogue and cute characters with well-designed models, but the 'gameplay' bit is as shit as the original mobage was with grindy combat. You're probably not missing out on much if you just watch videos of the story bits. I like a lot of the new stuff they added in though.

Any of the KF3 characters with "CV: ....?" are voiced by the vtuber. Pretty much all of the Animal Girls who didn't have a voice prior to the Vtuber or were added after KemoV started are like this. The exception is Coyote, but that's likely because she's a foreigner living in Japan and not a voice actress.
